Do you know what that ratio is on a 1.9 BE3? Or is there somewhere I can find it out?

you can work it out by counting the teeth when you fit the VSS :P

 

from a quick search you would have a white 19tooth screw on the diff, which would be turning at r/h driveshaft road speed, and a red 17 tooth on the bottom of the speedo drive unit.

 

so that's about a 1.117-1 ratio.

Merci bien :) You dont happen to know the amount of fuel the injector lets through per second? ;D I guess that can be worked out by removing an injector and pulsing it for a set time and measuring the amount..

214cc/min @ 3 bar flat out from memory, so 3.56cc/sec, but that's only if you're running them flat out, which with a standard 1.9 8 valve you will be about 60-70 HP short of afaik.

 

specifically what the engine needs when its Idling I have no idea, but you could work that out by measuring the pulse width vs rpm now you know the cc/min they flow.

The plan is to remove the digital clock from its plastic surround, enlarge the hole to accept the screen, and then enlarge the hole on the sloped plastic cover which sits next to the ashtray. Basically it will sit in the OE clock position, but just be a bit bigger :)

Wish mine was even slightly as fresh as yours.... As you've seen its not! :lol:

Can see where the wealth of knowledge has come from!

Haha, thanks! :) Hope you enjoyed the long read lol! Mainly any knowledge I have has come from making lots of mistakes, and repeatedly taking the car to pieces and then trying to put it back together! Glad I could help out with yours, was nice to be working on a 205 again! If you need any more help let us know!

 

No actual physical progress recently, but I have been gathering parts like a magpie goes after shiny things! :D
Another couple of mods are becomming possible through the collection of some rare and/or intersting bits:

5. Electric Rear Quarter Windows

Both electric and cable rear window openers have been discussed many times on this forum, and I have looked into Megane coupe electric openers, and ones from people carriers etc, but have never come across anything satisfactory- they have all been too bulky, or not operate in the right axis, or had the option to fit them neatly into the slim panels/cards around the 205's rear windows. Eventually I decided the only way to move forward with this was to buy a complete kit from a 309 3door GTi as a starting point and go from there. Unfortunately the entire cable system cant be fitted to the 205, as the handbrake housing which holds the levers is much wider and taller than the 205 handbrake cover, and fouls the seatbelt buckles.

A test rig to see how suitable they are.

So the current plan is to use the window mounts and hinge/pivoting part, coupled with the 309 cables and adjustment mechanism, with a pair of BWM e46 3 series coupe rear window linear actuators, which can be hidden behind the rear door cards.

The switch will then be fitted into the OE cubby panel which is fitted infront of the gear lever on 205 CTis with the electric roof- it has a moulding to hold a standard electric window switch, so the whole setup should look completely OE, with a 205 switch and 309 cables :)

6. M..m...mm..Motronic!

Something else I've always had my eye on as an improvement for the 205 is a motronic conversion- retaining the character of the 8v engine, while improving its manners around town and at low revs. The motronic 3.1 conversion, from the Citroen ZX gets rid of the dizzy and AFM, plus it a conversion which can easily be reversed, and obviously I will keep all the old components safely tucked up in the loft if I ever decide to go back to fully standard, and can return to a pretty fresh jetronic setup (new afm and refurbed dizzy)

Have nearly got all the conversion parts I need, including the mega rare AfM delete inlet air hose (many thanks to Anthony for parting with his spare setup :) ) Just need to sort a flywheel and sort the loom- as its originally a 405 loom which mounts the ECU in the engine bay.

sort the loom- as its originally a 405 loom which mounts the ECU in the engine bay.

Other way around Craig - the 405 loom puts the ECU in the standard location under the dash, whereas the ZX loom puts the ECU in the engine bay.

Neither.....

 

The 405 ecu sits in the scuttle panel on the left hand side, neither in the bay nor passenger compartment ;)

Silly me, I didn't spot that this thread was about Craig's 405 restoration...

 

Oh hang on - it is a 205 thread, and thus as I said, a 405 loom puts the ECU under the dashboard in the standard 205 GTi location.

Another question- does the ZX throttle pot fit on the stanard 205 8v throttle body? As I would like to retain the aircon idle valve, and the ZX throttle body would appear to need drilling and tapping to accept it (as the location is left as a blank on the ZX body) Not impossible, obviously, but if its a direct swap for the throttle position sensors, life would be easier!

No more real progress, as I havent been home that long after spending the summer working away, and I've also been browbeaten into finishing the midget before spending too much more time on the 205 by the other half, which is fair enough, the midget has been languishing in bits for quite some time now.

 

Still, Ive spent the bored evenings working away from home trawing for bits to finish off the motronic conversion package, Im pleasantly surprised Ive been able to track down some of the last bits, considering how rare the volcane is/was, I'm rather chuffed. It does help that alot of the parts cross reference, and were fitted to the 405, and other cars. A certain member with a reputation for tracking down bits is helping with the last few bits, such as the crank position sensor, so I'm looking forward to getting my hands on those :)

 

Welshpug sorted me out with a motronic flywheel, although I'm not particularly looking forward to dropping the box to fit it. I'm coming around to the idea of just removing the engine and box together, as it may make fitting the other bits, such as new brake lines and PAS setup alot easier. Plus Ive done it several times, whereas Ive not removed the box with the engine in the car, access looks like it might be quite tedious..

I also stumbled across a motronic thermostat housing on ebay for 25 quid, which seemed like bargain, as even if you clean up a used one, they tend to have signs of corrosion around all the steel pipe inlet/outlet pressings.

Have also finished it off with a new OE Citroen coilpack for around 40 quid, and the proper ZX HT lead holder, which finishes off the non-dizzy thermostat housing nicely. Just need to get a set of decent HT leads, as they have a 90 degree plug fitting into the coilpack, rather than the 205 straight plugs.

 

Another couple of motronic setup parts have been tracked down, the air inlet temperature sensor (genuine OE, which again, is fortunately found on various 405s, think I paid a tenner for it) and the 'Pad Capacity Valve' a damper for the MAP sensor in the ECU, a minor part, but again, was spotted cheaply, so I figured why not have a complete setup! Have also got some silicone 3mm vacuum hose to plumb it in.

As I mentioned earlier, Farmer kindly tracked me down a A/C specific jack, which is found under the passenger seat, rather than engine bay inner wing. Not exactly a major part required, but it saves the original jack rattling around in the boot as it has been doing for a while. Requres the carpet to be lifted out so a small nut can be welded on in order for the treaded bolt to secure it in place.

And lastly, Ive always thought the standard ride height looks a little.. high, particularly with the SL434s, so have got a pair of Eibach 7001s, as Ive got to swap the front hubs over for ABS sensors, I figured now would be a good a time as any to drop the front struts and swap the springs (will be an improvement on the old, original springs anyway I'm sure)

As to when all this stuff will actually happens.. who knows lol, Still, having shiny bits in stock is no back thing, its always a good motivator, and I prefer tracking down hard-to-get bits such as the motronic parts slowly, rather than in a rush, when the car is already in bits.

Not yet, will hopefully get the trim/surround bits done soon, as they can be done in the house to avoid working in the cold. When I drop the box, I will swap over the speedo drive and make a mini loom :) Am still really looking forward to it, should be a nice little mod.

I was told this too, but I didn't find it to be true in my case. My zx throttle body has the spindle machined to a flat rectangular profile and my original one was a D shape profile and longer. I'm sure it could be modified, but it is more involved. I manged to get an a/c zx throttle body from Graham so stopped researching it there.

 

You may want to check.

Thanks for the heads up. I will strip them down soon and compare. The easiest way forward may be drilling and tapping a suitable hole into the ZX throttle body, as it appears to have the suitable blank space in the body already. I will try a wanted thread, but I suspect the ac throttle bodys are few and far between!
