rallyeash 155 Posted December 19, 2014 Front lower engine mount now done. Used some 25 x 3 angle to strengthen the front end, welded the corners into the chassis legs and stitched it across the lower slam panel, ran a bead of panel sealent across the edges to stop and water getting inside and rusting inside out wards and stuck some pink oxide over it all Cut around the chassis leg to add strength Trial fitment with engine in. Engine removed, paint ground back, welded, sealed and painted in oxide
camgti 56 Posted December 19, 2014 Great work Ash. Love that you get things done! Really excited for you. Cam
rallyeash 155 Posted December 20, 2014 Offside engine mount cut out On the near side added 25mm angle on the leg and backed upto 25mm angle on the wing. Massive amount of strength added here now. I hate welding to thin body work, prefer 3mm and above. Still a fair amount before it's finished here but it's a start. Engine back in next to tac in the mounts... rallyeash 155 Posted December 21, 2014 More progress today... Cut out the lip on the engine mount which revealed a flimsy section! Added strength with an angle section. I also added one on the backside on the wing, didn't take a pic of that though. Mounts added I've changed my mind on the gearbox mount, I've decided to use one larger mount, I used the original civic mount to mock up what I'm after. This isn't what I will be using, I will be something similar but on a smaller scale. A fairly simple setup.
stu8v 68 1 Cars Posted December 21, 2014 Oh dear....... I had such good expectations!
stu8v 68 1 Cars Posted December 21, 2014 It just rough as mate, sorry and all that but I would be embarrassed to post up pics. If your are going to make mounts do it right. This could be great project. See the difference? All fabbed up from odds and ends cost £0.
rallyeash 155 Posted December 21, 2014 I disagree, the gearbox side is a mock up as I stated above, that isn't the end result, it's just a template to work from which can now be done on the bench when I have the right bits. Saves pulling engine in and out. I can work from the mock up one. The engine mount I don't think is a bodge, it's very strong and will work well. I've run around it with body sealer and put some oxide on it, looks much smarter in the flesh and once painted will be subtle.
matty 4 Posted December 21, 2014 (edited) Nothing 'rough as' with the front and top mounts imo. They look fine to me. And as you say the gearbox mount is only a mock up so will be fine once the finished article I'm sure. Perhaps best judged when finished / complete rather than still in progress. allanallen 528 2 Cars Posted December 21, 2014 A bit hypocritical stu?? The mount on the body in that picture is bloody awful and looks as weak as a fosters shandy.

allye 530 3 Cars Posted December 22, 2014 what the fack stu? That drivers side mount Ash made looks frankley OE and puts yours to shame, gearbox side is as stated a mock up.

rallyeash 155 Posted December 22, 2014 Went to a motor factors this morning and they came up with the bush I'm after for the gearbox... Think it might be from a golf or something.
welshpug 1,627 Posted December 22, 2014 looks like it might be the generic rh mounting bush used in a mk1 golf and the mk2 Scirocco (same chassis and engine bay)
Andy_C 50 Posted December 22, 2014 Good progress mate. I know jack about fabricating but that looks pretty bloody good to me.
aarontrophy 26 Posted December 22, 2014 This is really a good thread and the 309 is coming along really well mate. Engine choice not for me but all about being different and a 309 sleeper is a weapon in my eyes
309jazzpanda 39 Posted December 23, 2014 Looks like a 've rear axle Bush to me. Nice work mate coming along nicely, will add to my followed threads. Wouldn't worry about the criticism, seems to be the way on this forum of late
artois7 20 Posted December 23, 2014 No idea what that's all about. The drivers side mount looks great and as said before, OE. Hope I see this in the flesh one day as you're only down the road.
