So had an interesting night in the garage... thought I'd clean up the 1.9 £90 ebay engine with gunk outside, so got it under a rubbish light, and started to trip the loom, pipes, inlet and exhaust manifold off in the dark.

I was taking off the exhaust manifold when I looked at the back of the pulley and saw bolts in it, thought thats odd, and then looking at the front... WIN! Piper cams vernier pulley

396359_10150549428939330_509954329_8824406_559946363_n.jpg

Looked under the cam cover and everything looks perfectly clean, no wear, everything really nice which is good! So popped off the dizzy and saw it was a piper 270 deg cam, which was a nice surprise

395430_10150549465139330_509954329_8824506_1238843774_n.jpg

Then I looked at the back of the head at some weird stamps to read "HFH343 ST4" :)

395294_10150549436774330_509954329_8824445_555039674_n.jpg

Ports are insane

395774_10150549448459330_509954329_8824460_563034582_n.jpg

So yer... its supposedly a runner, ill whip the sump off and check it, do cambelt and water pump then just go with the flow and see what happens, only owes me £90

Hopefully itll run ok, esp with throttle bodies on instead of the ported inlet manifold that was on there!

Cheers,

Al

The sequential/dog bog? (don't know the difference) Don't even know how you use one! A normal clutch and you can just bang through the gears!??

sequential dog box, (dog engagement, and sequential gears like a motorbike). No clutch needed, only the get off the line, its got a TOCA triple plate carbon clutch for that :) lol. Just bang the gears up and down. This is a video of the same gearbox being used...

HFH ST4 - Hiflow Heads Stage 4 possibly? Might be worth a call to them to see if that is their marking and if so what, if anything, they can tell you about the engine.

That's exactly what it is, relates to the head not the engine necessarily though unless the block's stamped too. The three other numbers are just a reference.

I have a similar head.

Don't get your hope's up on that, I know Dino had something like this and made 140ish bhp on std injection and a Unichip (Motronic) and Das a mutual friend with 45 carb's made around 150bhp on a 285 cam until it went pop and upon stripping the head was a mixture of parts and huge shim's but to cut a long storey short we binned the lot bar the pistons/Cam and started again and ended up with 170bhp,

Blocks have never been stamped from what I have seen

yer... some weird stamps on the block, but prob just down to the engine builders referencing things, not gonna look it up. Tbh... for £90 i really dont care, everything looks real nice and clean, ill plastigauge the bearings tomorrow or at the weekend and go from there, seems to have had quite a bit of $$$$ thrown into it, heads are £600 for st4 alone so cant complain really can I! Bit of a bonus.

Anyway, one sides fully cleaned off, sort the other tomorrow.

bargalicious! Cheers for the info btw baz ;):)

Got the engine fully cleaned tonight, waterpump and cambelt off ready to change, pulley ready to mount the trigger wheel on and painted the block black because I had the paint and will probably be easier to clean, lol.

Changed sections... played with my brain for a minute then...

Interesting week... Monday I was far too tired, Tuesday the pub seemed more interesting, Wednesday I finally decided to get the engine rebuild bits and get it sorted. Ended up buying a head gasket kit with all the stem seals and everything too as there was a little oil in the ports, and while I had the opportunity I thought I may as well!

So whipped the head off and...

Cracked valve... balls.

424336_10150571432654330_509954329_8885692_1671857718_n.jpg

Everything was black, so you could tell it had just been running ridiculously rich, and probably pretty retarded too, chucking the EGTs through the roof and causing this, thank got for throttle bodies and management...

430230_10150571434549330_509954329_8885710_375108340_n.jpg

Exh valves were standard size so I borrowed one from another head I had, lapped it in, and thankfully the seat was ok :) panic over! Cleaned it, got it skimmed, lapped all of the valves in

Cheers,

Al

Ok, not a very productive night, but bottom end is checked, flywheel crank seal and oil pump crank seal are replaced, along with the sump gasket... getting there. Everything now clean and oil inspected. Hoping to have the new water pump on, cambelt kit on and everything timed up tonight... lets see how that goes huh!...

Did you check the valve clearance on the new one?

Also if you looked are the same type of valve used on the inlets, the few I've seen with stage 1000000 use different length valves

Head face looks very good thou

yep. all the clearances are done, The exhausts were AE valves, inlets arnt but cant remember... some triple collet +1mm things. Failure mode was due to excessive EGT's IMO anyway, rather than a fault with the valve. Yer I'm quite please with the surface for an old aluminium cylinder head.

Was burdened with a dodgy dial gauge last night, so didn't get much done... got the water pump on, new housing for the oil pump, got it roughly to TDC and 108atdc then just put the throttles on, smiled a bit and went to the pub. Getting a new dial gauge today so I can get it timed in and sorted later.
