A bit of a write up from yesterdays events:

Before any runs began i moved both my top mounts on the front struts in by 3mm exactly on each side so keeping a matched camber, from previous experience i reckon this would have given me an extra 1.5 deg camber so taking me to approx -2deg.

I had a friend take his tracking apparatus down for me and adjusting the camber gave me 18' (2mm) of Toe Out which was acceptable in my eyes for a little quicker turn in so didn't bother adjusting back to parallel.

Kept the pressures the same at 21psi and found a good improvement, almost hitting banks on the practice run because it was gripping better and i was expecting more understeer than what came.

Maintained this set up for the next run which was the record run and my pb

However i was marking the side walls through the day and found that the drivers side wall was now only rolling and scrubbing about a 10mm down the wall whereas the passenger wall was still being scrubbed practically all t he way to the wheel rim.

This would be mainly because there is 1 long right hand corner which is the hardest for understeer and 2 fast right handers which but there is only really one medium speed long left hander, the rest of teh hill is just small kinks.

I tried putting an extra 2psi in the passenger front so up to 23psi but no real change on the wall scrub so may be something i just have to live with

I will now get the car on the laser alignment equipment and see where im at in terms of camber and wonder if a further 0.5- would be worth trying

Thanks mate

She's performed outstandingly today at the last Hillclimb at Les Val De Terres for the season

Beat my PB by 0.14s which equalled the record of 33.47s set by the Escort mk2 running a big warrior motor, can't believe I equalled it and am gutted I couldn't have got that extra hundredth but its in one piece has matched a huge record and jaw dropped A LOT of people.....

When other competitors say they can't believe or understand how fast the 205 takes the top section of corners over the finish line you start to realise you must be doing something right.

A 3 day event in Alderney left then she can have a well deserved break over the winter

Cross camber and cross castor needed? Set the car up for the particular road course you drive.

I still don't think -2 is anywhere near enough, you've seen a definite improvemt so far, so why not dial in more camber? There is no grip to be had on the sidewalls, forget what others may be running camber wise, you need to get it to a point where you are using the full tyre on hard cornering, only way to do this is trial and see.

60 foot times and tyre wear will suffer if you increase camber too much, straight line traction is half the battle for a hillclimb car with a grunty engine, it's a different scenario to circuit cars running over kerbs lap after lap.

The increased camber has fixed the sidewall roll on the RH side but I am still scrubbing the whole of the tyre wall on the passenger side

I am going to preset some camber settings up to -3 to test in Alderney a their Tarmac is much more abrasive than ours!

One strange point also is that when I added that extra camber for the last 2 events I have finally dropped into the 2.3s 64ft times which I have never done before, strange I know as I agree with what you say Sandy

I am also going to have the tyres swapped over on the rims left to right to make the best of them

Out of interest, what is your up to date current suspension set up?

front: standard 205 front subframe, 450lb eibach springs, gaz golds, rj wishbones

rear: 205 beam? 24mm tbs and 24 arb? gaz golds, did you get the negative arms?

I know that even if I had the exact same suspension setup, you still got to have balls to drive it like that haha

Of course this is true, but if the tyre carcass at the pressure being used is soft enough to be rolling right over to the sidewall, then I'd expect they are also compliant enough to sit with a decent contact patch at rest in a straight line for grip off the start.

Certainly on the drag Mini we have run up to 3 degrees before, with 6psi in the front tyres it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference. 1.64 60ft is the best to date.

Think you have it all mate yeh

I think the rear ARBs are 23mm though and are PTS

Front ARB is standard 205 GTi

Solid mounted standard 205 rear beam

Haven't sorted the negative arms yet but I will and will request them at -2deg

The car drives and acts like a kart now and seeing as I used to kart (and win) from the age of 8 or 9 I think until about 15 it's suits me perfect but I knows it limits which means I can push it harder then people expect!!

I was chatting to some local guys that do a lot of French hillclimbs and ill be very interested in taking the 205 back to its roots one day where they say the French competitors will be all over the car because its French and modified, they said the best is St Goueno which is an hour out of St Malo and is a windy 3km run over 2 days!!

Just an idea as the extent of the LH front tyre roll I have, this is at 21psi before tyre warning and the most part of the run so expect to gain a couple psi with the heat!!

Doesn't look like too much of an issue. 3 is a bit much with crossplys.

Why not just ring BMTR if you're worried, they will be able to tell you a solution, or if it's a problem.

I've phoned them and also Avon and both had no answer for tyre roll.....useful!!

One said use 26-28psi and the other said no more than 23psi

Checked tyre temps last hill of this tyre and they are a good even spread

Do you think you will bring the car over to the mainland and do some events here? Its a great car but for a very specific event. (and then I can check out the engineering wizardary for my project).

Happy new year all

Anyone know if these will fit onto the 205 and if they will fit with standard discs or aftermarket required?

Thanks

google says its a powerlite caliper but I couldn't find one specifically matching that number, theyre usually M14 or M16 replacements and advertised as a maximum of 750 kg, so not the best caliper to use on a 205.

He's just come back saying that number was on the adapters which were for a mk2 escort, the caliper number is EV8729

Thanks for the help

CALIPER HIGHLIGHTS
Wilwood's powerlite is a smaller 4-pot caliper specifically designed to suit lightweight and small Formula type racers (maximum vehicle weight 750Kg). Produced by the drop forging process to ensure a stiff low deflection body but at a lighter weight - approximately 2lbs (1kg).

no wonder quite a few of these caliper manufacturers sometimes get slated for calipers flexing, mk2 escort is near a ton in stage spec, as is a 205!

So seeing as I'm at 720 ish should be ok

Do they fit standard size discs or require a 2 piece bell/rotor.

Are they worth buying do you reckon? Can probably get for 150
