Oh and whilst i think of it i also did the tacho modification on my clocks last night as well so that the rev counter works with the turbo engine. I used the same method on my GTI6 clocks and it's worked perfectly.

pic courtest of PeterT i believe

Just come to sort my rev counter out, I've soldered in a wire as shown in white in the pic above, however do I need to solder one in that is shown soldered in the pic, as a yellow wire from the right hand side of the board to the bottom-middle? Mine does not have one here.

no you don't need to do that yellow wire, just the white one drawn in

Not done alot on the CTi over the past week as i've had a few other jobs around the house i've had to do, like replacing the entire wooden guttering on the house which was a complete ballache but that's done now so i can get on with the CTI.

After stripping the hood and frame last week i took the frame to a local shotblasting place to get it stripped as trying to sand it by hand was a complete pain in the arse and was taking ages. For £20 i'm well pleased with the result.

SNC00425.jpg

So the plan for this week i think is to get the frame sprayed, remove the engine and continue sanding/prepping the body work

Welcome to Matts paint shop no job too big, no job too samll :P

I sheeted up my car port up this evening so i could start painting the hood frame. I had thought about having it powder coated but the possibility of it knackering all the joints was a bit too mch for me so i decided to spray it instead.

Seem to have gone ok

I decided to finish sheeting up my car port properly in preperation for the full respray and it also means i can spray other things quickly and easily in the future. I got 10 x 3m 20mm black plastic conduit pipes from B&Q for £12 and screwed them to the roof frame all around the carport, clamping the sheet between them so that it stayed in place. I then cut the plastic sheeting i got of ebay to size.

I then used some of the conduit as a weight on the bottom of the sheet which will stop it flapping about in the wind and also allow me to pin it down with a tent peg or 2 if needs be. The conduit at the bottom also allows me then to easily roll up the sheeting when not needed and a few metal hooks along the roof supports holds it all in place nicely :o

job done, roll on the body work.

The plan is to try and have it ready for Pugfest in July but i'm not sure how realistic that is . Best get my finger out i think :)

Have you done much painting before? It is the final frontier for me, so i'm interested to see how you go. It has been a really interesting read so far though - good luck with the final stages. It will be nice to look at it and know you have done it all yourself!

I've done bits and pieces of spraying but nothing like a full car before, but nothing ventured nothing gained as they say . I'm hoping Andy(paintguy) will give me a few pointers before i start though if i can bags him for an evening.

At the mo i've only got a little 25 litre compressor but i'm trying to get a 100/150litre one off ebay.

Yeah the pub is pretty handy although i've only been in there a few times as it's full of old giffers

i finished spraying the CTI hood frame in it's black basecoat over the weekend along with a set of wing mirrors to replacing the M3 style mirrors on my black GTI6 as i'm now sick of them  I need to get some more clearcoat tomorrow to finish it off but i'm pretty happy with how its turned out so far. My sparing hs certainly got better, and the sheeting up of the carport is working really well as i'm not getting any bits of dust or dirt in the paint

SNC00534.jpg

I've also removed the engine again so that i can respray the engine bay. My shed is now once more crammed to the rafters.

SNC00533.jpg

I spent an hour or so this evening starting to clean up the arches ready for spraying, i used my paraffin gun full of water attached to my air compresor along with some paint brushes to remove the mud and grime. It took a whle but they've come up nicely. There are some areas where the stone chip has cracked and rust has sstarted so i'll need to treat these before painting.

The plan is to clean up all the small rust patches, use hammerite rust inhibitor on the metal. Then apply an etch primer to the metal, apply stonechip to the front panel and any areas that have it missing ready for it to be painted.

I'll try and get a few more interesting pics as things progress

Matt make sure you key the inside of the wheelarches really well, otherwise any paint will quickly flake off and show the blue that is behind. How is the floor covering working out LOL!

pay day end of last week so i've been and bought some more goodies

a 2nd hand 150l 3hp compressor off ebay (picking it up on saturday)

compressor.jpg

New Spray Gun - hopefully a little better than the one that came with the aldi compressor but tbh i was getting pretty good results with it

spraygun.jpg

A inline on gun regulator so i can actually tell the air pressure at the gun, pressure drops along long hoses apparently so the reading on the compressor may not be whats actually at the gun. so this should help a little

airregulator.jpg

and finally an airline filter to ensure moisture is removed from the compressed air otherwise it can cause blistering in the paint

filter.jpg

rock and indeed roll

I picked up my new compressor today, i didn't realise quite how huuuge it was :P took me a 4 hour round trip to collect it even though it was only 35miles away thanks so some useless prick who crashed on the A1 shutting it :)

anyway the job was to try and get this

SNC00537.jpg

in my s*it tip of a shed

SNC00538.jpg

well a couple of hours later i'd managed it with some major tidying up (not that you can really tell :P)

SNC00540.jpg

So i'm almost set for the respray :P

The fold-away spray booth is a stroke of genius! I did a couple of little bits of painting of some backplates hanging off a tree yesterday and the greenfly for some reason loved to land on it. :)

I'd consider a couple of floodlights for when you actually come to paint the car- you really want as much light as possible to see what you are doing- if you look at a proper spraybooth they always have white walls and lots of lighting.

small update

still cracking on with the body work prep. I'm one those people that can't help picking at something so tonights stint on the CTI resulted in the bonnet, both doors and both wings being removed!! Both the wings came off without too much of a struggle just with the help of a small pry bar, a stanley knife and a long sharp kitchen knife.

It will allow me to clean up the arches alot easier but has highligheted some creeping rust which will niglle me unless i get it sorted.

Any way a few boring stripped down pics

Have you got a laminate floor in the garage there Matt? Sure I've not seen that in the photos before.

lol no i've not gone that far :) it's some laminate style vinyl flooring Mr Fenton kindly donated when he had his kitchen done. It makes cleaning up a hell of a lot easier thats for sure and will help when it comes to spraying as i can make sure the floor is really clean rather than embedded with crap like it was the case with the old bits of carpet.

Poshest carport around though :(

It's getting smaller and smaller!!!

It needs to! Not exactly a great deal of room around it for painting :D

Loving the floor Matt, good idea for keeping the dust down, but it might not look so good once it's plastered in overspray
