[trackday_prep] How £75 Soon Becomes £7500!

Standard 1.6 calipers and drums, with some Mintex 1155's from my other 205 on the front for now.

The aim of the game was to start at a base, and develop the car really + I find it hard to believe that 1.6 calipers wont be enough for most circuit work.

Sounds like an excellent plan. It's not as though the brakes have too much weight to deal with.

Seeing you mention the other car, have you done much to fudge lately?

I find it hard to believe that 1.6 calipers wont be enough for most circuit work.

So long as they don't have worn sliders (like most 1.6 calipers do these days!) they'll be fine and be more than upto the job of stopping a stripped 1.6 GTi all day running pads like 1155's. If the 1.6 calipers turn out not to be upto scratch, just swap them for 1.9 calipers (keeping same disks and hubs) and that'll prove very effective - you don't need monster sized brakes.

Well I've got a large pile of 1.6 calipers and bits here which I made 2 good sets from so far with all new seals on both while I was at it, one for each car effectively.

Will be heading over to Fudge later, hes locked away unfortunatly waiting for me to finish this one really havnt seen him since Feb so hope he isn't looked to sorry for himself!

Edit - Dont need monster sized brakes yet* Anthony :D

Right well as I said took the brakes off Fudge who is looking a bit sorry for himself stored away for so long.

Anyway got over to the workshop to fit them, been supplied base model fitting kits twice now for them, proper kit should be with me monday.

th_DSCN3355.jpg

Then I got on with flaring some more brake lines and shaping them up a bit

th_DSCN3361.jpg

Today I was going to put the engine, gearbox and driveshafts back in but after clearing the mess of a workshop up slightly decided I would go drinking earlier so came home.

Started to put the engine in today, was going to drop engine in from the top to the floor, bolt gearbox on and lift them up again. didn't really work very well so went back to my old way, bolt them together and lift them both in with a bit of careful movement.

Managed to get them in without too much hassle, one or two small scrapes, nothing that can be seen luckily.

th_DSCN3375.jpg

Bolted in the driveshafts, clutch cable on and tested the clutch was working.

th_DSCN3379.jpg

Went on to spanner check the entire from end, nice and tight bar the front hub nuts which still need torquing.

th_DSCN3389.jpg

Went to get on with trying to take the old drum apart to get some parts out of it. Anthony tried his best to get it off but when 20 tons wouldn't remove the stub pin he swapped the arms. Got all the parts I need but unfortunatly the back plate that ive been sent is for the drivers side not passenger. If I had a stepper drill on me I would have modified it there and then, but unfortunatly didn't so it wont be back on 4 wheels this weekend.

So the car was like this, and the opportunity came to move the car. I always said the car would drive out of this workshop, so thats what we did and onto the trailer after changing the tyres so we could get some pressure in them.

th_DSCN3486.jpg

Drove it onto the trailer, were it took a little journey to its temporary new home.

Friday I finally started working on it again, started decoding some loom bits and bobs, welded the blow in the exhaust up (really badly oops!) and made some bits ready to TIG for the coolant system.

Finally handed the key back for the workshop yesterday after clearing it out after the PCAD at Combe.

Fantastic,well done.

It's really uplifting to hear that you've seen it through this far,and I know the feeling that somtimes you think you just wont get it there at all.

Great car.

All the best

Emptied it out and put it back on the ground for rallyday since the buildings open for people to look.

Moved house on the sunday after Rallyday so havn't really had net since then.

Got a bit more done but been pretty busy working or prepping cars. Really cant afford many more delays so need to get on it.

End of the week I need the dash mounted, switch panel mounted, cooling system finished and wiring to be getting somewhere. Been offered a days test at llandow with a team close to the end of the month, not sure I will make it but will try.

Will get some updated pictures tomorrow hopefully.
