[race_prep] 205 1.9 8V Hillclimb Car

Recommended Posts

alexcrosse

Thought id start up a project thread for my latest toy. Needed something to sprint to get my national A licence so that I can then race my libra 16v mini. So after an enthusiastic drive in a friends 205 decided it would be the perfect tool for the job and started to look around for one. Picked this non-sunroof 205 up off ebay. Its a 1.6, but a 1.9 8v will be going in onto the 1.6 box. With the odd bit of work done to it.

Anyway, this is car

All of the interior in the car will be for sale, but im guessing I have to post a few times before I can advertise that on here?

Everything was in damn good nick, no rust, and interior was nice

312198_10150350564979330_509954329_8087162_855093622_n.jpg

Always amazes me how these stay so red... wont be needed it anyhow

Partially stripped

And again

307403_10150350605529330_509954329_8087394_1727351490_n.jpg

Picked up this yesturday

Got a set of jenvey 45's from an old car and an MBE 967 so will shove them on the front.

297370_10150350605929330_509954329_8087401_610673448_n.jpg

Anyway, thats all for the moment. The mini build of mine is the true money pit and where all the fabrication effort goes, so this is just going to be a relative quick and cheap throw together project to get out of the track. Bolt in 6 point cage, normal floor mount brackets for my seat, 1900 with cam jenveys and headwork, just need an all round nice car.

Cheers,

Alex

Cheers baz, yer cant believe how cheap it was really, nice shell too, few little dings on the wing but nothing really noticable, and for a non sunroof straight car it was a bargin really.

More info will come as I learn what on earth im doing with 205's... I know my minis and vauxhalls pretty well, but nothing much about peugeots yet. Mini is work in progress at the moment, last time it was on the road it had a C16XE vauxhall on jenveys in it with a few other bits on it, a happy 160bhp which I used for messing about. Before that it had an 8v, before that an R1 in the front... before that a 1425 full house A series... before that just a 1275 stage 1 kind of affair. Now its having an 1800 turbo with a 6 speed sequential dog box and the shells gone under a fairrrrr amount of development too...

Assorted random mini pics

So started cracking on last night. Whipped the ancilleries off. Put the inlet manifold on which id cleaned at work, came up pretty well.

313136_10150351918324330_509954329_8093272_744042743_n.jpg

After making a few throttle body noises I carried on and whipped the engine out.

307707_10150351919699330_509954329_8093274_1328401532_n.jpg

Left it at some horrific angle for a while, dumped it on the floor, hoping to strip the top end off and then pressure wash the engine bay tomorrow. Hopefully I should have the engine bay clean and white soon as ive got some white paint too.

Those wheels look stunning. Can you do another build thread for your mini as I want to know what make they are!

Ok, update, and excuse my ignorance, please correct any wrong ideas I may have in my head after reading the puma race engines article...

Stripped the 1.6, measured the inlets and its a late head, so the same as the 1.9 (41.6mm) Taking the plastigauge to the garage next week to check the cam beearings, hopefully the head is sound, just a bit oily... aslong as I can get the stripped exhaust stud out :(

300125_10150353200879330_509954329_8098360_356904484_n.jpg

Liners dont look too bad, once I clean the block I will bore mike them to see how round they actually are, honing marks are still visible appart from a bit of slap at the top, but nothing a quick hone wont sort out

321516_10150353200604330_509954329_8098359_1147903093_n.jpg

gearbox came off nicely, there was a brand new fast road clutch in too which is always a bonus really... Ill do a full rebuild on this regardless, maybe see what AB can do for me.

315909_10150353201114330_509954329_8098362_1624570303_n.jpg

Then it was lunch time... anglia bonnet finally has a use

308846_10150353202024330_509954329_8098366_1128183360_n.jpg

Got the block on the stand and ALOT of oil on the floor, cleaned up and went home!

310467_10150353202214330_509954329_8098367_115069445_n.jpg

Now... am I correct in saying the block, head and liners are identical to the 1.9? My plan was to use the block, head, liners, pistons (1.6 pistons for higher compression according to puma) and then just use the 1.9 crank and rods??? Is this do-able or have I been mislead? Any help would be mint before I go much further with the engine.

Tonight im hoping to pull the crank, rods, pistons and liners out and then start cleaning up the engine bay for paint.

Cheers,

Al

just what I was going to say about the wheels, look like Tom Fenton's mate Karl at Force racing :)

yep, theyre the ones, def light, 3.6kg a wheel or something, tempted to get a set of 13x10's off them in their new design once the pug is done for slicks, not anything lighter on the market really.

Any ideas on those engine questions I stuck up guys? :)

yup, 1.6 head is identical to the 1.9 from around late 86 IIRC, cam is different but not by a massive amount.

block and liners are identical to 1.9, 1.6 pistons on 1.9 rods will give higher compression, not really a DIY task to swap them though, it will be 1905cc using the 88mm crank of course.

Miles on ehre can sort you a gearbox rebuild amongst other bits.

Some of those wheels would look good on a 205 I think B)

Im sure they would if i was willing to fork out almost twice as much as I paid for the car just on 4 rims ;)...

Cheers for that reply pal, put my mind at rest. Ive got a silly cam lined up from someone here at work, he used to build 205 race engines for the hotrod guys so has a selection for me apparently... Ill get onto miles, I have a friend who works for AB motorsport so hes getting me some quotes too. Ill be able to swap rods over at work too hopefully.

Thanks again :)

Al

Rods are doable to change, you just need to get some heat into the little end to take the nip off the interference between the pin and rod, then make a cradle to support the piston in the press.

Yes they are the same.

DSY's would look good on a 205 I think.

Take most things off that web site with a pinch of salt, He's banned on this Forum too.

The only Pug Race engine my Mate knew of him building lasted a handful of laps at Castle Combe, mind that was along time ago now,

Most hot rod stuff was done by Mass in the day, The main man there left but from the sprint car build from a Derv block there are getting back up there again now,

Box wise I;d be tempted to get a 4.4 for it

Should have a selection of cams by the end of the week, contacted Neil Roper about head work too. Chap at work saw 240bhp out of his 1.9 hotrod engine... pretty nice, but I'll be happy with 180-190 really.

Painting slam panel tonight, and stripping the head for cleaning :) Excited about getting this on the road!

Ok... so got the cams to choose from yesturday.

1 has been on an engine dyno for 1 test, the others are new in sleves still :) So went to put them in the head to check the duration and maximum lift with a DTI... and they have alot of lift, cant run duration measurements until I take some material out the top of the head for clearance. So ordering up some new burrs to get cutting. On the plus side head is now cleaned and ready for porting and polishing.

You can see the duration on these cams just from the photo below compared to standard, should be fairly mega!

got some poly bushes for the front suspension, id like to go for rose joints like the mini but this is supposed to be a budget build... whilst I was online I got a quickshift, wheel boss and a wheel.

Also have painted the slam panel now

And started work on the flow bench to get the best out of one of these 8v heads! Shonky engineering ftw.
