Tom Fenton

What was your 60ft time for your 15.08 sec run?

Looking at them when you get it right you are pulling 2.4 sec 60fts, with a light car and some sticky tyres you should be able to get to 60ft in about 2.2sec really, this immediately drops you to a 14.8 quarter, and as you will be going faster at that 60ft point, you will also gain some more time over the run. What tyres are you using? If possible I'd suggest some specifically for the 1/4 mile that you swap over when you get there.

Aside from that you need to work on consistency. If you get an appauling 60ft time then no matter how good the rest of the run is, your 1/4 ET will still be poor. If you can run consistant 2.2/2.3sec 60ft times then you can concentrate on the rest of the run.

i was also going to suggest some Toyo R888's for the front wheels.

if you're really into chasing 1/4 mile times, get a NOS kit too .

I think my biggest problem i have is not remembering what i did on each run, next time i go i will do a run and study the slip instead of finishing and going straight round to do it again.

what about in-car camera too? :)

The in car camera would be nice, i would have a record then of what im doing, I cant afford to do that mind. I will have to be a bit more systamtic with the runs. Nitrous may well be an option. I noticed you put a wanted nitrous add in the wanted section. It definatly seems the most cost effective way of getting more power but, at the minute i like the idea of having a play with the engine and seeing the results, when the runs start to plateu then i think i will resort to nitrous. So far though the cost to get to this stage from what i had is about £1200+ and ive only lost .7 of a second from when i started and .5 of that was down to wieght on the second set of runs. I knew it would be expensive to lose the time but i thought at first it would be a little cheaper. Still going in aprill though so that time could drop with the setup im on. Im hoping fot 14.7 so that will be a full second quicker than a year ago.! 1 month to go and a bit till race day. Phill

Just an updat to the car, had a bit of a rethink and ive decided to make it a dedicated drag car, ie, no cage as tom fenton has advised, no indicators or switches that arnt needed, basicly everything thats not needed is going to save on wieght, im getting rid of my fuel tank and battery from the boot and having a 1 gallon tank and a small light wieght battery next to the drivers seat in the passenger foot well. Also ive changed the front end to a st tropez valance which i know is probably less aero dynamic but its lighter and think it looks better. Also ive jacked the rear of the car and lowered the front on the coilovers, the rear shocks are set to thier hardest so hopefully this will aid getting my 60ft times down, Ive got to do quite a bit of rewiring too because it was just all a mess, i still had the original fuse box dangling in the footwell so ive cut it all out. I may get some slik tyres if i can afford it and also im looking at changing the radiator arrangement, ive got a few ideas but thats not decided yet. In a mad moment ive spent £20 at a scrap yard buying a radiator from a punto but i wish i hadnt now. Any way heres the car after today, Let me know what you think. Cheers Phill

If you're interested in loosing weight then loose the big heavy wheels off the back and put some base model wheels and skinny tyres on, you dont need the grip on the back and skinny tyres create less drag, hope you've got a rear undertray as well or you could be loosing half a second

Ive got one 4" wide wheel of a ford, i think its a spare from a ford but it hit the calliper so need some spacers, i do need some very basic 205 steelies though u are right, its just finding them for free, cause i cant bring myself to buy them, lol Not thought of an undertray, could that also give the effect of sucking it to the ground which will be a bit undesirable? Cheers for your comments sutol

I'll have a look next week and see if I've got two steelies, I've defo got one and you can have em.

let you know during next week.

the underside needs to be blanked off as you have an open box underneath creating drag as the airflow hits the rear skirt where the spare usually is. This will slow you down up the last bit of the track.

Just remove the rear valance too then. Less weight and nothing to cause drag!

Having an under tray shouldn't suck the car down. Ground effect, if that is the correct term, works when there is only a very small gap under the car creating a pressure difference to that flowing over the car...........I think.

Looks brutal from the front buddy! going to be a right little animal! I defo have one steelie spare if you want to match it up with sutol's other can bring it with when i pop up to play swapsies! Or if you can wait a wee bit you can have a pair off my 205 when i've got that on somthing different!

Very kind of you dave and sutol thanks, Your only in warrington too so would be easy pop up to you. As for the under tray, it is my understanding that if you get the air moving faster under the car than it is over it, it creates a negative pressure and causes the opposite to lift, ie causing a suction or depending how you look at it a positive pressure forcing the car down, Ive had a think about it too and think if i had a flat pan over where the tank used to be and back over the spare wheel well, it makes a divergant duct in fact so velocity will decrease and presure will increase so it will just smooth out the airflow as you say sutol to make it more aero dynamic. Nice idea, however making something that doesnt look like a complete bodge may be difficult. Any one have any ideas. Maybe dave could make something in fiber glass?

Work to do tommorow includes, doing all the electricks again, neater and less complicated, and removing the cage. Been playing with my s16 block tonight, The engine is in fantastic condition,so i was thinking use this crank 86mm throw,87.5mm forged pistons and custom longer rods, pin hieght to suit, use the mi16 head to try and keep the compression as low as posible, maybe a bigger gasket too to try and bring it down some more. Just playing about with ides at the minute but the s16 will be a dedicated nitrous engine with the view that later on, as this engine will cost me enough, the engine will in effect be supercharger/turbocharger ready. Thats a long way off still but the progress on my car has made my head run wild. Thanks everybody. Phill

Nice one.

Brings back memories. I had a 17.02 a few years ago in a 998cc Mini which was missing at the top end of the track (fuel starvation).

Done low 16s in a 1293cc Mini with little money spent which was great.

You're getting off the line quick which is good

Keep it up :)

Cheers dave and sutol, It was sooooooo cold, and i kind of didnt do the supra, after that pic it came on boost and did a 13sec quarter mile . Its just he hanged around on the line for a while. Oh well, Thanks for watching it though. Out of the 30 runs i did too, my gf only got three videos and only one of them where i actually beat someone. Never mind, she did stand there all day and watch me go up the strip all day, which i thought was mint. The only thing now is i cant see when im next going to be back there, its looking more and more like its going to be ultimate street car as we are supposed to be getting some where to rent. Oh well, at least if we rent some where with a garage i will be able to work on the car whenever. Cheers Phill

Just a couple of updates, I fitted and sprayed my fiberglas bonet from pugpower dave, cheers, i think ive got the back end just a bit to high so im going to lower that.

Ive also been looking at the weights of all the front suspension components and have decided to go for 306 hubs with base model calipers and 1.9 rear solid discs which im going to drill some holes in, Im going to reduce the diameter of the standard rear discs as they keep locking up because theres no weight at the back end now and i dont think theyll be used that much. Whilst i was doing the brakes i thought i may as well remove the servo as its extra weight, it takes up room, i dont really need the servo and plus it takes its vacume from one of the ports on my manifold but id rather have that hole filled up because it just where i want to mount the crosfire injector. I also bought a nitrous kit on sunday so im going to collect that at the weekend.

Some of the other stuff i bought, i wish i hadnt, i mistakingly payed £16 for opening rear window seals which i still havnt even got yet because the ebayer is not the best. Im really gutted about that because ive got the set i took off from the car in the trailer full of rubbish. Oh well that will teach me for buying when im tired, the other thing was non opening rear window seals, i never knew they weighed so much. I think the lighter solution will be to just use a sheet of pollycarb bolted in with plastic nuts and bolts. But im sure ill be able to sell these on again. I also bought the supposedly magnesium wheels with 14" yokahoma 048s on, Im not going to use these either as again there is a lighter option, but im waiting to see if this one happens. Overall ive spent a lot over the last two months and im hoping for a drastic improvement. Still plenty more things to do too so Ill keep this thread up dated.
