[trackday_prep] 205 Gti-6 Trackcar Project

Here is the gearbox i have for the car but i have been told it wont fit because i have the gearstick with lift up

cable reverse selector, to be honest i aint got a clue. here are some pics of the box, can anyone tell me if i need

to change the gearlever gubbins or get the right box, cheers in advance

Steve, the gearbox will fit. That car has a brand new be3 clutch pedal which I used the be3 cable with, which I used to run a be3 mi16 gearbox, but the box retained the lift up reverse (next to first). You just need to get a gearstick from a shell with be3 box fitted so no dilemma!

and after another glimpse, I think you have a lift up reverse cable hole in the 3rd pic!

 

That must be the same style gearbox as what I used, strange that it is stamped be1 and uses a be3 release lever (that's exactly the same style of casing as the mi16 box I used)

Happy with that then, just hope the box is good now.

 

the father in law has been sorting the wiring out, i put the dash back in, wont be long now before

the lump can be fitted

got a little more done tonight but wrong timing belt kit stopped play. change that tomorrow and the old boy will fit it tomorrow hopefully.

 

started to prep the block a few days ago for some paint

new cambelt and water pump fitted

trial fitted the engine in its original position (not tilted), exhaust manifold joint to downpipe sits about 1" of the seam in the tunnel, 1 gear rod will need adjusting and the master cylinder needs adjusting for clearence.

glad its in there, but you need to sort the few things i mentioned :rolleyes:

 

you can see its a touch lower on the drviers side :(

Did you find a right PITA to time up the engine?

Took me a while using torx keys for timing pins :lol:

the old boy did the timing belt and waterpump, he owns and runs a service and tuning garage. i wouldnt atempt

changing the belt on my own as it would end in terminal failiure im sure

Hello Steve,

 

Is that an old picture of the engine, it isnt sitting level in the engine bay. Gearbox end is way high. Have you used the lowered engine mount method to sort the clearance issues?

Nice little project, should certainly do the job!

 

Have you done anything with the seat mounts? Looks from the pics that you've kept them in there. They are notoriously weak, seen them snap plenty of times (including once at Combe sending Martin Wicks' 205 into the barriers backwards).

 

Just a shame to have done all that work only to leave something so simple.
