Good progress, its gonna look good on those steelies when its all cleaned up.

There can't be many around, the only reason i started mine was because i thought it would be rare and a little different. I don't think i can count mine in at the minute however as i put its engine in my 5 door GT shell!

Amazing post Allye, a real inspiration, so much so I wheeled my GTI out of the garage and it was fully stripped over the weekend and is off to the Sprayer tomorrow evening.

Cheers buddy, always nice to get some positive feedback.

 

I spent the day thursday on it hoping to get it done but a leaky radiator stopped play, I've swopped it for another now so should be good to go. Instead I finished off the interior.

 

 

I also spent a few hours chasing a short circuit, when I got the car the clock and interior light did not work, and when opening the passenger door I could feel the resistance of a central locking motor that clearly wasn't working, and when I plugged my radio that didn't work either. After a while chasing I discovered it be the drivers central locking motor, could be a failed part or possibly where the wires go from the door to shell have aged and broken, not had time to sort that so thats a job for the future,

 

Best part of the new shell? Fully working in-tact coin tray

 

 

Got all day Thursday and the weekend on it so IT IS going to be done and driving around

Bled the brakes today, went round twice with the pressure bleeder and it did it perfect first time! First time in my life thats happened. Got the tracking down, was a mile out, all good now though.

 

 

I'm taking it over to a friend next week at his body shop to give it a mop as in the last 6 years or so its done very little miles and been parked up for a quite some time, so there is Sun damage to the roof, boot and bonnet. Took it for a few runs up and down the road as well, all seems well. I think its running cooler than before as well!?

 

Going to raise the rear as its too low for my liking.

 

3 wires have come out of one of the dash plugs, its always been like that just sorting it now! Anoyingly I can't see any numbers so I'll have to trace them back further, might be a job for Anthony! Anyone got any ideas?

Sorted that plug now. Just been looking through old MOT's and since 1998 its done less than 20,000 miles.....how odd!

Yes..... in the next few days will be some good ones. Been working 6 days in a row this week so just been driving it in its fairly ratty state. 300miles so far though so all is well apart from a horribly knocking driveshaft.

Not a huge amount to report, just a bit of tidying up and sorting the awful knocking noise from the o/s front.

So I got the grill on, also sorted out the missing front chrome insert, at some point the bumper has been replaced with a base model with no inserts, so I had to drill the holes for the chrome insert, no worries there. The driving light brackets were also missing so I made some news ones from the metal I made my old bucket seat sub frames from, only 6mmx30mm so should just about be strong enough my fine engineering skills at work

 

 

I sourced another front passenger seat from Danpug to replace the tired drivers. Danpug was an absolute legend and happened to passing near by so bought it all the way from Cornwall for me, top man! Just swapped the subframes over, got ride of both plastic covers and bent the lever out a litter and jobs a goodun.

 

 

The leather in all the seats need some attention so I'll do that at some point.

 

My oil leak was of course down to a leaky cam again! This is my third attempt and it seems to be holding so far Luckily it was the inlet one so much easy to get off, I spent bloody ages cleaning both sides and wet+drying it smooth, liberal coating of decent quality gasket sealant.

 

 

The steering had felt a little odd since putting it on the road and I was getting a knocking noise from the o/s front which I thought was a driveshaft, turned out to be a knackered wishbone ball joint, new a year ago so the impact in the Rallye must of killed it I needed one asap so £70 later and it was replaced and all happy again.

 

I will be purchasing a powered mop soon to address the standard phase 2 flat paint to see if I can get it to come back, apart from that and some serious plastic caring and replacing the XS decals its pretty much there ..... until next spring when I'll be dropping lynx a email or two

I had purchased the rallye decals from him not long ago so he took massive pity on me when he herd about the rallye and sent me out some XS decals, I've got them ready to go just need to mop it first.

Why scrap the Rallye shell? There's barely any left, and almost anything is repairable! Trust me on that one as my Rallye has been in a worst state than yours (sort of still is in terms of bodywork), and thinking about it, my old mk1 Clio took a big impact but still got repaired.

If it hasn't been scrapped, pop it up on the for sale section. No only will it most likely give you more pennies for the conversion, but it will give you Rallye the possibility to live on

 

As you can tell...I get too attached to cars lol.

 

Anyway, you make seriously quick progress, and I'll be no doubt picking your brains when I get around to fitting a gti6 to my Rallye

You have read that it's bent to the point that the doors don't open properly any more, haven't you? It's not just a dinged wing.

 

No one is going to repair that sort of damage properly at the current time, not when straight base model shells are still cheap and plentiful. In 15 years time they might when value and scarcity make it viable, just as they're repairing Mk1/2 Escorts these days that are well past it.

 

The only thing that has any value (besides a few quid weighing the scrap metal in) is the VIN plate and V5 document, as that is to all intents and purposes all that you need to make any base model shell into a "Rallye" shell. You've only got to look at the Mk1/2 Escort world to see that at work, although in that instance there's often an even more murky reason why a shell would need another ID than just to make it into a premium model...

As Anthony has pointed out, If I sold I know I would be selling with the buyer knowing full well its bent but I still wouldn't be happy about it. I recently changed my screen saver to one of the photos I took of it just before I finished it, its only now I'm really kicking myself, right in the balls. Any excuse.....
