Dwindling Numbers...

Recommended Posts

Anthony

Following on from the hotly debated topic a few weeks ago about people breaking cars for spares and how they'll be none left at this rate, I thought the figures from the DVLA of the exact numbers of each model left on the roads (ie taxed) as of the end of last year, and perhaps more interestingly, how those numbers have dwindled over the years.

DVLA licensing spreadsheet

205 GTi's:

2000 = 29376

2002 = 18567

2004 = 10407

2006 = 5712

2008 = 3626

2010 = 2545

309 GTi's:

2000 = 4858

2002 = 2395

2004 = 915

2006 = 374

2008 = 184

2010 = 100

The above figures only include taxed cars and hence they'll be more out there in garages and lockups being restored, or track/competition cars that get trailered to events, but even so, the figures do make quite grim reading - especially 309 GTi's that are rapidly becoming an endangered species given that they're almost certainly now into just double figures!

The historic figures make for more interesting reading to me - 8.66% of 205 GTi's are left on the road compared to 10 years ago, and just tiny 2.05% of 309's :o

Sandy's former signature I feel sums it all up nicely - "Save a 309 before it's too late"

Oh my lord! I never realised thats just how low it was. 309's are just awful. There's gotto be more rallyes on the road than 309's!! Would be interested in xs and rallye numbers.

I'm currently deciding if I should strip and scrap my 309, it needs a bit of welding but I just can't scrap it, especially now! I just can't do it!

I bet a lot of them are the ones either being worked on/restored, used for track days or breaking them.

Mines been in storage for 3 years now :o

So add 1 more taxed on the road by July time all being well ^_^

What are the XS-GT etc left, as they are sport models too ?

205 Rallye = 76

205 XS = 370

205 GT = 130

405 Mi16 = 38

405 Mi16x4 = 8

Oddly, there's apparently 57 BX 16v's still out there and taxed! I'd expected that number to be much lower than that!

Oh, and whilst on the subject of Citroen donors, there's 837 Xsara VTS's out there - so Alastairh hasn't quite killed them all yet :lol:

3587 205 GTI's SORNED Q4 2010 according to another sheet on the DVLA site.

That's interesting, as that's MUCH higher than I was expecting - I was guessing about 1000-1500 or so, but I'm nowhere even close!

Indeed, I know that there's a hell of a lot of projects/restorations out there and people who have running cars that are never taxed (ie track and competition) but you can't help but wonder if that figure is right - over a thousand more cars off the road than are currently on it? I guess that it could account for the more seasonal use that many of the cars are now getting, as Q4 would be about when they're laid up for the winter, but even so the high number surprises me.

309 is the 205's uglier but argueably better handling sister, built on a very similar floorplan and with lots of interchangeable bits.

Well I'm responsible for 1x SORN :)

I also know where there's a 309 GTi for sale for a couple of hundred quid, ideal for breaking or restoring... so you can subtract one from the 309 figure, was thinking I'd buy it and strip it myself if I had the space and time :D

Shocking figures, thought there would be a much higher amount of 205's taxed.

Me, my Dad and my brother all have 1 gti each which are all currently SORN'd.

It would be interesting to see how many people on the forum have road worthy / taxed cars vs SORN'd cars. I guess it could be a close call either way.

1 taxed 1 sorn, I wonder how many people own more than one 205? There's around 6000 in total of taxed and sorned but I bet the number of differnt owners is around half that

'kin hell, 205's on the roads are really disappearing!

Even more scary is the amount of 309's and 405 Mi16x4 out there!

Great dig out of information Anthony!

We should start a poll! :D

I have 1 taxed, 1 SORN.

No wonder the prices are going up though, with that many of them left! :o

2 taxed and on the road for me. This makes depressing reading but good to know.

I use both cars for work but I'm starting to feel more protective after reading this, but I enjoy driving them to much to keep in storage or not use as much
