How is the box Allye?

got the mi16 out yesterday, first bit of work i have done since the snow. this thread mite as well be called mi16 bolt and unbolt!

like an off roader with no weight over the standard gti struts!

if everything melts tonight, i shall get the engine out of the xsara in the morrow, and start striping it of all its wealth.

the race is on!

i havnt got the VTS engine out yet, i hope to if the snow clears off.

gladly it is not a 'tapper' so i am just going to slap a head gasket, water pump, and timing belt kit on it, get rid of the air con, and pas pumps. and find an aux belt to fit, and whatever clutch i need to use for the gti6 flywheel, and a push type be3 arm shall be fitted.

During that time, i intend to fit the 4.43 final drive from the mi16 gearbox, into a nice 1.9 be3 gearbox which i collected off a forum member earlyer this week. and also weld in a servo/bulkead plate, and strut top mount plates (still need to get) along with giving the engine bay a good paint (white),and the subframe / bottom arms( black) fit the vts rack (2.6 turns) and run the remote brake resevoirs (compbrake) neatly inside the wiper motor area, using copper pipe, instead of the braided hose which i couldnt prevent from kinking on first instalation. and tidy up the existing 'live' loom with some new conduite, and run a cable to the rear for Boot mounted battery. and get the vts exhaust manifold re-angled so i dont have to go smashing up the bulkhead.

so im guna be buisy!

after all that, i intend to fit the gti6 loom and unlocked ecu, BB+M vts hose kit (blue) and group N engine/Gearbox mounts, do away with the heat exchanger/oil cooler and fit a mocal 13 row oil cooler. i am still unsure about where, i run a gti radiator, with twin fans and i would like to keep the twin fan setup, and i dont want to mount the oil cooler somewhere where it may get damaged. i may try and improve on my lowered radiator method, after the sump guard is in place, so i can see how much room is available when everything is in situe.

You'v got yourself into alot more work than I have! Your doing very similar engine work though, I'm doing the head + bolts, cam belt, tensioners etc, clutch (BX16v for the vts box) and half a dozen gasket and seals. I'm keeping the heat converter oil/water thing though.

What are you doing about shafts and diffs? I'v read 1.9 shafts don't sit 100% into a VTS box, maybe put in a 1.9 dif?

I plan to have to completely finished in 4monthish/approx/hopefully/maybe/youneverknow ;)

(PS I'm paying miles to do all my electrics!!)

i would like to see it running in 4 months. i am using the 1.9 gearbox, so no shaft issues there. and i am going to attemp the electrics myself!

i plan on using different colour conduite and insulting tape, e.g. red for live loom, yellow for engine/ecu loom, and blue for car loom. to try and keep things simple. (rallye/PTS colours!)

didnt get the engine out today, havnt got a socket big enough for the shafts. but it is all disconnected apart from the downpipe, lower mount and the shafts. so it will be on the deck tomorrow!

xsara PAS resevoir would fit neatly...

How do you go on with the car loom? connecting the TU to the MI16/GTI-6 item? The TU loom and clocks are very simple and have no ECU. (I have never seen a MI16/GTI-6 loom ecu etc so i have no idea on what anything looks like)

i havnt got that far yet, im hoping that i can get the dash bits to work off the gti6 sensors, afaik there is rpm, water temp, and oil pressure light, so i hope these should just 'plug and play' !! then there is altinator wiring, and starter wiring, and the loom i hope! and i need to change the map sensor for a non multiplex type.

How about the ECU?

get it unlocked, or buy an unlocked one

so it will work without the immobaliser.

also i need to sort out fuel pump wiring ( relay off ign switch) with a gti tank and pump

fuel is easy!, what i mean is how do you power the ecu? as the tu loom has no ecu? its probably really easy and im just missing something!

Update time.. not much has happened work wise, but I have been doing a lot of thinking whilst away from home!

this week i am...

Ordering some roll cage bar to extend the omp cage through the bulkhead to the struts, bulkhead brace for pedal box, and strut top plates.

Ordering the paint, White top coat and primer.

Intend to strip interior, remove windows and paint whole car inc engine bay before the vts lump goes it. also the underneath will be getting a good pressure wash and a paint.

I intend to fit a 309 beam with partner t-bars and vts trailing arms ( have sourced a beam, just needs collecting )

then it will be the job of running the new brake line from the pedal box thru the car a bias valve then to the hydraulic handbrake and then to a 't' peice before going to the rear brake hoses. (goodridge)

front 'GTI' subframe is coming off and getting seam welded, painted and re-fitted, along with the 309 wishbones and new bushes.

i have 2 pairs of 1.9 gti front calipers to recondition, and a pair of bx front calipers that have recently be re-cond and are ready to fit on the rear ( large piston size for handbrake effectiveness) will be wound down on bias valve for foot brake.

I intend to use Ferodo DS2500 in the front, and i have EBC Bluestuff ready to go in the rear.

due to the weight increace with the vts engine, i will fitting stiffer 'tarmac spec' springs to the challenge spec Bilstein front dampers instead of the gravel ones (iirc the tarmac ones are about 180lbs)

I also have a compbrake quickshift to fit, along with constella linkages, to the mi16 box for now, with be3 clutch arm.

30012011796.jpg

XU10J4RS engine is nearly out of the xsara, was strugling to fing a 35mm socket, and now i have one it is too cold again!

30012011795.jpg

I have got a un-locked 306 gti6 ecu and loom sorted out.

Also, the resonator on the inlet manifold is getting removed. and the head is being sent off for pressure test and a skim if needed, new head gasket and w/p and timing belt kit fitted before instalation.

looking good, can't wait to get mine done now. why are you using the mi16 box instead of the vts one? i thought they were near enough the same.

they have the same ratio's but the lingage on a mi16 box is the same as a 205 be3 box, the vts one is different. so all i need to do is swap over the clutch arm for a normal type clutch, and a speedo drive from a s16 ( mechanical and electical drive)

i will be using the final drive from the vts box, and fitting it in the gti 1.9 be3 box when i can get acses to a good press. but the normal box will be fine for now. i may even wait until i get a plate diff to fit into the closer ratio box before i fit the lot.

thanks for the interest. i cant wait to get in mine either!

not much happened lately due to the garage getting built.

should get the vts engine out tomoro 'finaly' then i can get the 205 in the garage and start striping it for welding the plates on and painting.

309 beam arrived today, will fit with the vts arms as soon as i get a rebuild kit.

with no engine in it looks a little high on the front!

i will be aswell! i was supprised at how much needs to come off when placing the gti arch over the rear quater. it looks like a good 3/4" has to come off the bumper aswell, is this correct?
