With you blowing your crank seal and your sump gasket, I would check the breathers for adequate crankcase ventilation.

Something is amiss...

yes mate Im going to pull the sump off too.

compression is ok (170 each), so I dont *think* a seal is gone.

Anything else I can check? Oil pressure is just under the max mark when say cruising on the motorway, dropping to 1/4 ish on idle.

try peugeot for the crank seal, not sure what brand they supply but its probably not as dear as you'd think and it will be o.e so good quality!

Other than that, try a motor factors and see if they can get you payen. My engine builder supplied me payen seals and headbolts when I ordered parts through him but he's out past Nutt's Corner.

box off (at last!). Not going to bother with the hockey seals, looks pretty clear cut it was the main seal at fault.

No, it was John (I think!) @ Byre Engineering, just beside Ophir Motors..Great fella, he's done engine work (skimming, valves etc) for my xs and gti, very good at what he does!

Good to see you've found the culprit then mate, at least you know the problem now and can get fixed now!

Are you putting a new clutch in it as well Paul? If it has put that much oil out it may well be contaminated?

clutch is bone dry amazingly. I guess all the oil was kept behind the flywheel.

got a seal at the local motorfactors today. Interestingly it was thicker than the one that came out. 10mm vs 7mm. Looking on servicebox and it lists 7mm. In saying that it went in well enough and isnt sitting proud.

FIA iirc was the make.

Just make sure you have eliminated the cause (overfilled with oil/inadequate breather flow) as otherwise you will be replacing it again in a few weeks.

:)

breather muck up I think was the problem. So Im fairly sure it will be ok now.

Forget radweld, use a two part epoxy resin like araldite to patch the hole directly from the outside.

I always use aluminium braze (durafix I think it is called), but this is only any good if you are safe to heat with a blowlamp and not near any plastic parts.

Middle of a rad not normally a problem, ends, not quite so good.

Found some youube content

araldited the rad, seems to be holding ok

car seems dead on so far. done around 100 miles I guess. No oil or water loss. No smoking on boost, and only smokes on idle after about 10 mins on the drive (or 5 if been thrashed before parking up).

Will do another 100 mile trip on it today to my mums and see how it is. Such a quick wee car I love it again after hating it so badly for the last few weeks. Cant believe I was going to break it!!
