My 205 Has Shat Itself

Recommended Posts

I wish I could just drop it off at the local specialist and hand them a cheque at the end but alas not possible.

Plus its good experience, and now I know the pistons arent detted to f**k and the bore walls are good etc.

Unfortunately that is the situation you are in when you buy a modified car, no matter what it is.

Capn. Pugwash
It's quite common on here and I bet other places for people to think the worst and go for relatively drastic measures (and cost) when a few simple steps or checks before hand would save a great deal of hassle.

Capt Pugwash recently went through all sorts of heartache and stress, doing continuity and voltage checks, sourcing and swapping ECUs when it was just a £15 coil.

That was a week of my life I'll never get back hehehehe!!

go on say it, "I told you so :P"

I wouldnt have been happy with a std gti engine is the honest truth.

Had a mate from AI have a look at the block/head etc and he reckons they still look good so head going back on later and some new breather pipes and we will see what we can see.

I wouldnt dream of saying it mate...

Ive had a nightmare in the past with twin 48s, they broke my heart and my bank balance. I also done an Mi conversion myself with a little help from a friend and i never wired up the fan and hey presto i boiled it. I had a cracking 1.9 fit for Gsi Cavs and i sold it to build the most stupid idea of a 205 ive ever had..

All im trying to get at buddy is we have all been here, one step forward two back. Stick at it, it will be soooo worth it!!!!!

well head is back on and all the plumbing done. Just the inlet manifold to put on, fill it with oil and see what happens. Will be running a large catch tank to see what comes out.

Hi mate,

A few months back I destroyed my MI engine,Excessive oil getting blown out breather all over engine bay.

I done the same as youself,Pulled the head off for a look as I knew it was something serious,Apon taking the head off everything looked fine from up above(looking down on the pistons)

I then pulled the pistons out to notice one of them had partially siezed causing excessive blow by.

If I were you,The first thing I would be doing would be a compression test to make sure all is OK.

Hope you get to the bottom of this.

Could've done that earlier and saved the hassle. The comp test is more revealing than a visual inspection, hence Maturin's comment I suspect.

yes I think youve made your point, the lack of a time machine makes it a bit hard to rectify though.

would you believe its running better than before?

Need to get a proper run out in it yet. But not a drop of oil out the breathers after a couple of short runs.

well false alarm lol. But Ive now found the true cause I believe.

There is oil weeping from the sump to gearbox join at the bottom rear. I think this is throwing oil up round the turbo/driveshaft the lot making the rear mess. The front it seems is oil running onto the flywheel teeth and getting thrown out of the top of the box just by the starter. making the front mess.

Im guessing this is the end crank seal? How much of a mare is this to change? Im guessing box off at least? But hoping its not a bottom end out kind of job.

appreciate any advice.

ps I done a compression test, all fine ;)

Box ready to come off but can't get the gearbox mount bolt to clear the chassis rail. Always something.

Any tips? Have the bolt out of the bottom engine mount but need about 1/2" more.

I just left the drivers driveshaft in place does it need removed?

Yes you will need to take the other shaft out, just making it harder work otherwise imo. Also if that gearbox stud doesnt clear just take it off, its threaded in and comes off without too much bother. :)
