[project] 205 Mi32 Project - The Twin Mi16 Engined 205

Nice mods Nik, the hatch looks cool and the arch extensions look a bit better. Are you ever going to try and fit a rear valance, or is it too difficult? It would look nice.

How many BHP are the wing mirrors worth? :D

well there's half a valance there if you look better .

the plan is to remove front engine's backbox and fit our very nice aftermarket valance back on.

having no side mirrors and no windscreen wipers gives you more than 0.1 secs in a race,

therefore mirrors with better aerodynamics must be worth at least 2 bhp alone :).

and here's the story about our 3rd event of the season:

402 Street Race - Velika Gorica (CRO) - 16-17/Jun/07

205Mi32_Ev07_0301.thumb.jpg

this time we had driven the car onto the race (200 km's).

DAY 1:

- qualifications (only one run available) - against a tuned Honda Civic. we hadn't

synchronised the clutches after the trip, so the result wasn't great, but we manually

chose to compete in the 14 secs class.

- the first round of the race in 14 secs class was against a Fiat Coupe Turbo.

unfortunately, my father made a huge tactical error - although he had a large lead,

he completely misjudged the finish line so he let the throttle off way before the end

of the race and hence bizzarely lost by 0.1 secs!

later during the day, the race was cancelled due to a storm (continued tomorrow

morning) so we decided to head back home and come back in VG in the morning.

205Mi32_Ev07_0310.thumb.jpg

DAY 2:

- in today's qualifications, we were lined up with a very fast RS4-engined Audi A4.

we again opted to run in 14 secs class.

- the first round was against an Audi S3 and it was quite an easy win.

- the 2nd round was against a mk3 Golf VR6 Turbo. this was also going to be an

easy win... but the first mechanical problem of this season happened - one of the

guides for the rear shifter rod fell out and the introduced play in the linkage disabled

the selection of the 3rd gear :).

this was obviously a very bad race weekend for us and we didn't meet our expectations,

but we'll have another chance soon...

while Phase 7 is still in progress, it's time to start another Phase:

Phase 8: Turbocharging The Rear Engine :D

the twin-engine concept has proven itself with standard engines,

so now it's time to start adding power, with help of booooosssstttt :D.

the first part of the Phase 8 story is all about acquiring the most important parts:

205Mi32_Ph8_017.thumb.jpg

and getting custom bits and pieces made too!

you can find the first part of the story (with 32 pics) on THIS PAGE.

thanks.

turbocharger get's temporarily mounted on the car:

and VEMS WBO2+EGT system gets installed and running:

omg what a weapon the car is going to be. Do you have to mess about with compression ratio?

Do you have to mess about with compression ratio?

not at the moment, as it's a J4Z/DFW/CAT engine and we'll be running low boost (~0.5 bars) :).

the third part of the Phase 8 story!

we get the engine running, with fueling managed by MegaSquirt ECU:

205Mi32_Ph8_073.thumb.jpg

then we turn our attention to boost cooling setup:

205Mi32_Ph8_082.thumb.jpg

and finally - fit larger, "turbo-ready" fuel injectors:

you can find the third part of the story (with 32 pics) on THIS PAGE.

just a little explanation, as the story makes it look like we're

doing a whole turbo conversion in just a weeks time  - Phase 8

updates are not "in real time", we've been doing preparations and

gathering parts for a few months but i've decided that it's best

to present it all logically grouped and arranged step by step,

at the same time as actually doing the conversion :).

thanks.

the fourth part of the Phase 8 story!

in this update - turbo mounted, exhaust made and chargecooler installed:

205Mi32_Ph8_121.thumb.jpg

it was time to start it up and go for a drive as it was a race with time

to get in time on a race (402SR event) ;), which starts tomorrow!

you can find the 4th part of the story (with 32 pics) on THIS PAGE.

Really cool project :(

As seen in the vids its no doubt that it performs great, but i'm curious of how is the handling now compared to a fwd 205?

i've also been curious about it so i tested it on a race track (with two engines running obviously)

and surprisingly it handled very good. i did not push it really hard (as if i was racing), but i figured

out that it would be better if the rear hubs were not 1.6 (therefore rear track not wider than front)

and if we had coilovers in the rear too :(. can't say how does it compare to FWD as you get to

each corner much sooner/quicker :D, but it would definately lap faster on the same track .

thanks.
