  1. Hi everybody – long time lurker here, first post! I'm from Argentina and recently got a 205, a pretty well kept XS from 1992. It has 230k on the odometer which is quite a bit but the car is mechanically and aesthethically sound. I recently installed XS vinyls (here in argentina it came without any decals), Hella lights and some mudflaps for extra rally flair. I did some basic maintenance, changed cambelt, including water pump, oil and oil filter, air filter, fuel filter and clutch cable as the clutch was super stiff. It's smooth now. Here are a couple of pictures of the car: It's all been pretty smooth sailing so far, I've driven around 1000km in the last couple weeks with the car. However, there is something that bothers me: The RPM needle shakes like crazy. It is like a micro-shaking thing, it still displays the correct RPMs, but instead of holding steady it moves just a few mm to each side very fast. I do not thing this is an engine problem as the engine seems to rev just fine. Anyways, the visual part is not so bothersome as the sound is...it makes this mosquito-like stutter sound that is really loud inside the car. So even though it seems to be harmless, it is very annoying and I would like to fix it. I've done some research in the forums and found some people with a similar problem BUT with the speed needle which apparently goes away with a new speedo cable. But the tach doesn't work the same way (it's electronic, right?) so I'm kind of lost as to how to go about fixing it. Without looking at it in depth, a mechanic friend said that the problem is probably the needle or the mechanism in the cluster itself and I should change the instrument cluster but I would like to avoid it if possible as sourcing a good one could prove difficult here. Do you guys have any ideas what could be causing it and if I may be able to repair it? Thanks!
  2. Good day all, I recently bought a 1992 1.9 GTI (30 years after my first one) in Sorrento green. During the 18 previous owners time almost every interior panel has missing screws, holes, broken tabs etc. etc. I am working my way to putting it back to factory standard and now want to replace the two rear trim panels either side of the parcel shelf as there is an empty hole in one where I think an alarm push switch went. They also cover the rear speakers. However, do I need to drill the two rivets out each side that support the parcel shelf or am I just missing something? By the way, the door pockets were a bit floppy and also had missing screws. At sometime in the past someone had overtightened the screws and domed the holes out. After knocking them back flush and buying more screws they are nice and tight now. Kind regards, Rob
  3. Alright, I want a new carpet for my 205 as mine is a bit shagged. Newton are making these carpets now and decently priced as well at £200. Don't want to buy a second hand one as they won't be perfect and the ones that are will be deer! I got a sample from them and was impressed! Just wondering though if anyone here has fitted it and what they reckon? Cheers.
  4. Does anyone know where I can get one of these. I know they are rare, but have heard rumors they are more common in France? I think it will neaten the dash up, and make it more symmetrical (weird, I know). Thanks Alex
  5. Dear All, I have a 93 1.4 GTX, and the poor girl's on her last legs. I have been looking for some time for a Phase 2 1.9 GTI to replace her with, but they seem to be few and far between in the price range I am looking at (with <110k on the clock). Unfortunately, I'm being narrow minded, and I'm looking for either a Cherry Red or a Black one; but I haven't seen very many about (and I'm a newbie on this forum, so I'm not allowed to post a 'wanted'). I have however seen plenty of Phase 1.5s about, and the current GTX has the Phase 2 lights, so I should be able to do that part of the conversion. But what about the dash and interior trim, as I do think that they look much better with the black than the grey interior? So I was wondering; how difficult would it be to strip the entire dash and interior trim out of my GTX, and put it into another vehicle? Secondly, I quite like the sunroof models, but it seems that the non-sunroofs come up more frequently. Would anyone even contemplate trying to remove the sunroof from one vehicle and fit it to another? I know that there are all sorts of leaking problems with the roofs, so I presume that this is a bad idea. Any thoughts? Lastly, I don't mind getting a vehicle which needs quite a bit of work. I'd probably have it externally resprayed (if it needed it), but I would prefer not to have to strip the engine out of it to paint the engine bay. Do I therefore have to start with a like coloured car, or could I get away with spraying a grey one black, for example? I'm sure this would offend the purists, but would it completely sabotage the resale value of the car? I certainly don't want to buy a half decent car and ruin it! Your advice is greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Mike Farrow
