Gel Battery From A Mobility Scooter

Hey, just noticed in another thread that people can use the gel batteries from mobility scooters rather than the red top ones in race/track/rally cars, just wondering what the advantages to this are and how well they are with repeated use starting car etc. also what changes do you need to make alternator wise if any for recharging it?
