Houston ........ We Have A Problem

Recommended Posts

I started fitting my supercharger kit today and came across a small issue, the bloody bonnet won't close!

Please follow the links below to see what i mean:

Another under bonnet shot

The kit is designed and proven on 306's.

I need to drop the O/S of the engine by about 30mm.

As I see it I have 3 options:

1) Drop the engine a bit by using a different upper mount arm or shorter rubber mount (I remember reading about using a Mk2 escort one some where) although this may cause issues with the exhaust manifold clearing the subframe and result in drive shaft issues.

2) Get a bulged bonnet, I think this will be expensive and look funny, the main ethos of the conversion is for stealth  .

3) Don't bother fitting the kit, No chance! I have been planning and saving for this for a year now!

So, has anyone got any ideas?

Why would it matter?

Just modify the bonnet. I persoanlly wouldn't drop the engine that much. Sounds like a time bump for an accident.

No one is going to be seeing it. They'll be spending more time on your boot...

I'd modify the inlet manifold. Why is it sitting to far up? The person who made it should have thought about the engine angle, which is 30 degrees....so putting the flange on a 20 degree angle would solve your problem.

Close the bonnet hard

Buy Sam's modified GTi6 inlet perhaps?

Hilgie: Thanks for your reply.

The kit was made for 306's for which it does fit.

An RS lump in a 205 must sit higher up......

I can't really change the angle too much as the charger, throttle body and airfilter sit in front of it. I will look into though as there may be some room to tweak it a bit.

How 'flexible' are fibreglass bonnets?

this is why the manifold sits up like that

as you can see the supercharger sits directly under it, though I think it would be possible to make it fit but would mean another custom inlet.

Could you not chop the top edge off the plenum then have it welded back up?

Fibreglass bonnets aren't flexible really, unless you want to flex a hole into it?

also going from this pic I'd be dubious whether you could fit this under a standard bonnet at all.

A subtle bulge & a bit more fitting room can be obtained by using an auto bonnet.

Don't know anybody with 2 for sale by any chance do you???:)

problem with an Auto bonnet is that the bulge is at the back not the front, though it'll be a good place to start I guess?!

Would sitting the back edge of the bonnet on raiser blocks help at all?

The fiesta boys do it for cooling but it may help you out?

I was thinking that.

Fancy bringing one to the Curry on Friday?

My current thoughts are an auto bonnet, at bit of shimming and Mk2 escort engine mount rubber (like Spiky uses) combined I should get enough room. I will investigate further tomorrow.

you'd be surprised the extra room you get under the auto bonnet, because it lacks the support ribs that run under the standard bonnet. plus get rid of the silly cloth, its uselss. you can also get a shorter engine mount for the inner wing. check spikey's '6 build diary for details, i think its an escort rs2000 mount that gives the biggest drop in that dept.

Can you not just cut out some of the bonnet strengtheners? Like Tom says, the auto bonnet doesn't have them so they are not that essential!

I would just get a set of lower engine mounts. Quite a few of us are using magic's ones without issues... He does a lower top mount, an offset lower and a different gearbox stud thing

Should get you close to where you want to be, then you can play with the other bits to get it perfect
