Cam Bearing Size

Anyone know the size of the TU3MC cam bearings?

Need to change the headgasket and my new head isn't ready yet, so thinking about bunging an xs cam in there for a little more poke at the top end, but IIRC the two don't share the same bearing size?

Ok, question no.2 - how hard is it to change the cam in-situ by jacking one side of the engine up?

My cousin wants one of my spare xs cams for his 306 after seeing what I was up to in case your wondering. :(

Far easier to do it normally and take the head off?

He's not keen on that even after a I told his its an easy job, 'cause the headgasket/belt/tensioners were only done last week B)

IMO, F-ing nightmare. You'd have to undo all the engine mounts to get enough movement I think.

Yep, in theory its possible, but in reality was possible and whats realistic are two eniterely different things!

It's not as if its hard to take the head off on a TU really, even an injection one. Whip off the head, change the cam, jobs a goodun!

Just to follow this up I was at the catcams stand at the autosport show on friday and their catalogue actually lists the TU3MC as having the larger bearing sizes, as opposed to most of the range running small bearing sizes?

Not that it matters 'cause I'm putting the 3S head on now anyway.

The camshaft has some marks from swarf damage which I'm not happy about though - has anyone got a Rallye or 3S cam going spare?

Edit - does the S1 rallye have the same size journals as the TU3S, anyone know?

Thanks for the offer but I need the engine back together by midweek.

I might try to repair this one by polishing it down but I don't think I can saftely build the ceramic coat up to the level it would need to get back to the right clearance after flatting the scuffs off.

Cheers though.

The 106 Rallyes (S1 and S2), 1.4 and 1.6 XSi all have the large bearings. TU3S, M, 3.2, 3a etc all have small bearings.

Cheers Sandy, catcams have been confusing me again :)

Really should fetch my vernier from the workshop, but the cars in pieces and it's 6 miles away...

I bit the bullet and ground this one down for now, I might have that one off you if you still have it in the summer though, as I've a bare rallye head coming next month.

Sweet!

I nearly had a heart attack earlier when I realised I'd filled up with 95 :(

Ran Ok though, have to top it up with 98 for when the warm weather comes in though, it's had 0.8mm off the head

Certainly got some midrange, and the extra compression and port work has made that 8v soundtrack even louder

The only problem is either the fuel pump or the throttle pot has just given up!

Not bad for 2-figure rebuild :D

We just got 95bhp on a standard XS at JKM (who were recently in PPC saying how good they were)

Do they usually make more than book power? :(
