[engine_work] Mi16 Engine Bay Tidy & New Head Fit !

Recommended Posts

chris 417 mi

Been wanting to sort my engine bay out for years but never had the time/tools/ courage to start taking thigs apart !

Last year i did my first mi conversion on another car so now its my blue pugs turn !

I didnt fit this engine it was done for me by a local garage about 5 years ago, the throttle bodies were also fitted for me and the current big valve head again fitted by a certain company whom i wont mention but am not very happy with, as it has never give the power it was supposed to :) .....but never mind cos i have a new standard head with cat cam on the way from QEP ;)

made a start last sunday and here's the progress so far :

Getting driveshaft ready to come out

post-7995-1176413854_thumb.jpg

And the other one, sooo easy with an impact gun, best thing i ever bought ;)

post-7995-1176413932_thumb.jpg

These shouldered bolts on the longer drivers side shaft hold the middle bearing in, i tightened them 'open' so they dont get lost and are well out of the way whilst removing the shaft

post-7995-1176414055_thumb.jpg

Now for the radiator, i took all the higer pipes off first then carefully drained the water out of each pipe working highest to lowest at the front of the engine (still got water everywhere though ) best leave the rear colant union at the back of the block till all fron pipes are off and theres less chance of gettin soaked where you cant get out quick :)

post-7995-1176414217_thumb.jpg

All pipes now out ! gotta start on the gear linkages and finally the dreaded exaust manifold

post-7995-1176414284_thumb.jpg

Oh and does anyone have any ideas how i should lift this out ...bearing in mind someone has kindly decided to remove all the lifting eyes from the block

post-7995-1176670197_thumb.jpg

Part of the alarm wiring :D looks like it was joined by ...err.....twisting together and a bit of luck :D

post-7995-1176670395_thumb.jpg

One of the inlet ports, apparently 'ported' but isnt this supposed to be very smooth ?? looks like it was done with a rough flapper wheel

Thats normal, rough surface adds to the mixing of the fuel/air.

Keep it up ^_^

post-7995-1176962196_thumb.jpg

View of the cams, funny thing is the timing marks are way off ! inlet cam is almost exactly on the white timing mark someone has put on ...but the exhaust cam is almost a quarter of a full revolution out :) anyone shed any light on this cos ill be taking the head off very soon !

The cams were probably timed using the lift at TDC method. Timing marks can become irrelevent when aftermarket cams and pulleys are used.

just set it to TDC with the crank pulley locked and put some timing marks on the cam pulleys and you should be able to get it pretty close.

Locking the crank pulley is 90 deg. BTDC, pistons half way up and half way down.

All i was gonna do was just remove the belt as it is now clean and pain the engine then take it somewhere to get timed, unless anyone can show me the extact points etc cos i really dont want to bugger a new head !

chris I'll come down one night during the week and show you how to time it with the new head, well enough to get it running. Timing wont be bang on as your having new cams with different durations and lifts.
