can i ask what you have done to the 309 to get it to that weight?? as i am currently building a 309 sprint/ hillcimber and i did not think that weight was possible??

so far i have removed literally everything i could and keeping it road legal for the mot, though the only reason for that was due to track stipulations and believing it would be easier that logbooking it, though now i am thinking different.

thanks

aaron

Hi Aaron,

Don't know where to start, but essentialy it's down to common sence and all in the detail, but here is a broad run down.

All wiring with the exception of rear brake lights, indicators, front single wiper and radiator fan removed.

No rear spare wheel or metal frame

Door lock removed

All un necessary relays / fuses removed

All side trim and red insert strip removed, holes filled in and a white stripe painted on in place

Small battery

No alternator for sprints ??

Std induction manifold removed

Throttle body removed

AFM removed

SAD removed

Water pipes removed and re routed

PAS removed / pump, resevoir, pipes, ram

2 front bumper brackets removed

Inner hard front bumper removed

1/2 of radiator cowl removed (just kept fan side)

Lowered radiater / fan cowl 35mm to achieve clean / cold flow into Jenvey's

No headlights

No spot lights

Sounds like my Visa :) I have left the inner metal front bumper behind the plastic one though as a last line of defence if I go into a tyre wall front first as it may save the expensive slim fan, radiator, manifold etc. Without it theres nothing at all in front of the fan.

thanks for that information over the 309 and what has been removed.. sounds very much along the lines of how mine is being set up..... :D

i can't wait to find out if mine's that low in wieght.... if you're interested i may be able to sort tailgates for phase two in fibreglass or possibly carbonfibre.... cost shoudln't be too bad. but let me know. :D

i have been speaking with the local ( bristol ) msa club and they have stated that i will be running in the modified saloon class with engine capapcity from 1800 to 2600 cc :P . i can't believe that.. any ideas on what engine i should think about running if that's the case.. don't think an mi will quite hit the mark now.... :)

lol!!! I wonder is a skip is more balanced front to rear due to the thincker sills etc. the hood mechanism must weigh more than a standard boot!

It certainly felt it around cadwell, and I think the rear tyres certify that too!

averyaaron1979: Thats the problem with the south west class splits! Means you can end up with some much larger engined cars. Over in the SE its 1.4 to 2 litre for us. However for you there are still tons of madly quick 2 litres. There are some 250bhp mk2 Astras, a couple of 205's Mi16's putting out 230 odd. I competed at Castle Combe last year in my ~800kg Visa with its 168bhp Mi16 and got absolultey stuffed. You have tons more great hill climbs down there compared to over here but they are even more dependant on power

Just go out and have some fun, just dont expect to win unless you stump out 5k plus heh. As for the engine. You cant just put anything in for the modified production class. You can do what you want with the head but the block must look the same externally as one available in the car from new. An Mi16 block is generally allowed even though I think a bit of ribbing is different but they also let Escorts run "205" Sierra blocks which also look slightly different from the outside. A GTi-6 block is probably too different, not sure. Not really many other options.

I agree that initially you should be getting used to the car and events before you invest heavily in the engine. We look after several cars in the 1800-2600, which range from 1800-2200cc, they are all competitive and capable of winning. It's an irony of the class that the smaller engined cars seem at the moment to be the most competitive! Power is essential of course, but suspension and the soft bit behind the wheel, are just as important.

You can legitimately use the MI16 in the 309, it was a series production car in accordance with the rules.

I don't know whether it is still available but Cookiemonster was selling his 1780ish cc engine which would get you in the lower class. I think he said it would produce about 150ish on std induction, 170ish on throttle bodies (carbs ?) so could be competitive without blowing the bedget (too much anyway).

The regs we use state that the car has to be listed in a number of car magazines etc for sale in the UK which the 309 Mi16 wasn't. Shame as this stupid rule means you cant run a lot of imports like Starlet GT Turbos and so on in any of the road based classes and technically they end up in sports libre unless you change their name to just a Starlet on your V5 and say you added the Turbo afterwards! It becomes even more silly with something like an Integra Type R. You can run a 98 import as it was for sale in the uk then so listed in the mags but you cannot run a 97 one as it wasnt listed even though its the same car!

Almost as stupid as our "Standard Production" class regs where you can change shocks for decent adjustable things but you cannot change filter element which will do nothing compared to decent suspension!!!

thanks for that info.. that has cleared up a fair amount of questions i was going to start asking as the only reason i asked what engine to run was to establish which engine to eventually change to... there was going to be not point running an mi if it was not going to get anywhere in the class.

i take it though changing the engine to diffent from what it should be then i would be in the libre class??

anyone running in the sprint/ hillclimb for the south west area??

i am trying to work out what to do to the 309 without spending £'s by the bucket load on the engine that will make her better in the handling and braking stakes as this is first line of attack....

what suspension is other's running??

what's known about the xu10 engine as i am sure i read somehwere that this is simular to the original 8v and can be bored easily to 2.2??
