205 8v Turbo Mod's

Recommended Posts

GTI-6Sam

Hi

My 1st post here and im picking up my 205 Turbo today (Xantia Engine)

just done a search and read through loads and loads of topics but ive still got some questions i'd like clarifying.

What are the best modifications if im hoping to get circa 200bhp out of this engine? Or whats a safe power level to run them at?

Are there any specialists around the midlands who could do the work?

Cheers Sam

From one Sam to another hello and welcome to the Forum.

Modifications to reach 200hp you will need a new manifold and turbo plus bigger injectors and new management to get the best out of the engine.

DES developments are in the Midlands and would probably carry out that work for you.

Cheers

Sam.

What about headwork?, performance cam?, water injection?

Me personally i dont really see the need the head work on a forced induction engine or cams.

Water injection is a good idea though.

The standard turbo cam is as flat and lazy as me on a sunday morning. Im trying to find out wether a 306 XSi or 1.9 GTi cam will fit.

As for 200bhp, a mere remap and small boost increase will give you close to 200, Im running about 190 at the mo @ 1.1 bar of boost.

If you intend to run big boost then you will need a fuel cut defender as the ECU has a built in map sensor that cuts the fuel at anything over 13psi. Theres no other way round this, beleive me, Ive tried!

Cool

FCD's aint that much

But get one before a remap yes?

Yes, the fuel cut isnt that bad but after over boosting for about 2 seconds its like hiting a wall!

Can get round it if you feather the accelerator and keep an eye on the boost

Sounds like fun

So are the engines themselves prone to any faults?

There was a wild rumour about the pistons being weak and prone to failiure. But Ive never personally heard of such thing happening. And Im the co-owner of the 406 owners club!

But....

The standard intercoolers are weak.

The actuators are pathetic

The cam is lazy

The exhaust manifold is awful

Boost pipes arent the best

Rads are prone to holes

Apart from that its all good

Yeah the turbo wont last long running Foxys spec and by the time you have had a remap you may aswell

run decent management if you care about the longevity of your engine.

Stock injectors and manifold will only flow enough for 180hp so i was informed.

Standard bottom end is good for 300hp though.

Have fun

The benefits of headwork on turbo engines is exactly the same as those on NA engines.

i would agree with that, my TT was loads better once i had a stage 5 head on it.

In fact probably even more so. If you can achieve an extra 15% head-flow and therefore 15% more power (OK, it's probably a little less than that but it will do for the purpose of this example) then it's going to be more power on a turbo than an NA, for the same cost. Think about it. You pay say, £400 for 15% extra flow from one of the reputable head-tuners. On an Mi16 with 160bhp, that will result in an extra 24bhp. If you are running an Mi16 turbo with 250bhp, that extra 15% will be another 37.5bhp - 13.5bhp more for the same job/price.

Yep thought about it ;) What i meant was you dont necessarily need headwork to get 200hp from this engine.

well its sound asleep in my garage at the moment. bigger intercooler and water injection is a must. currently at 155bhp and 182 lb/ft but my god does it move.

What's weak about the std. I/C?

Is a 1.6/1.9 cam a possible change (I wouldn't have thought so since they are often referred to a 'hi-lift' cams (in comparison to many other std. cams), and as such are not SUPPOSED to suit Turbos)?

i thought it was the amount of overlap that made NA cams unsuitable for turbo engines. when the exhaust valves are open at the same time as you inlets you just piss your boost out through them.

Yep, pretty much. There isn't too much to be gained by swapping cams. The 1.9 GTi cam is probably about as lairy as you want to go.
