Hiya guys, managed to get the cover off, but as you can see by these photos there's a small amount of Mayo all over the place.....

Should I clean this all off? and how would I do it?

That doesn't look like mayo to me - it looks like water in the oil :eek

Mayo collects in the breather/oil filler cap which is relatively cool - the head gets far too hot to allow 'traditional' mayo to hang around.

Does the oil on the dipstick look milky or just normal?

Well it's a good job you're changing the head gasket then!

...and the head bolts

...and the inlet manifold gaskets

...and the oil - probably twice to get it back to as clean as it should be

...and probably the coolant/antifreeze

...and probably some other things too!

Buy a Haynes manual on ebay for next to nothing. It will stand you in good stead. Just the 205 one will do and typicallly go for about £3. Though I've seen 205GTI specific haynes manualls go for a £10.

I'ld just get one of the £3 ers for now.

If you dont want to buy a breakers bar you can always slide a piece of pipe over your bar to get some extra leverage.

And when your putting it all back together you really need a torque wrench if you want to do it properly.

(euro car parts quoted me £11 on the headbolts today btw)

Replacing cambelt as well. already got one of those. Gotta Haynes manual too. Sometimes it isn't very helpful.

Also... is it completely necessary that I get the Head Skimmed too? I'm planning on re-conditioning the whole engine this summer anyway. This is just a temporary fix to get it back on the road until then.

The maual shows you how to check its warp level. But where ever you get the head skimmed will be able to tell you if it does need skimming which is very likley if the head has blown. Well worth the money cuz if it its warped to much I doubt that your engine will last untill summer without needing doing again.
