Rev Counter Not Working.....

Recommended Posts

RHULPUG

Hi, please could someone tell me how I can get my rev counter to work. My 205 has an Omex engine management system on an S16 engine if that helps?....

what ignition coil you using? how is rev counter triggered on your set up? through the omex or a feed from coil (packs)

I was told by the people who did the mapping that it was true the omex because they said due to it being digital and the standard rev counter being analog the 2 could not connect.....hope this makes sense....dunno if they are talking rubbish though....hence why I am on here trying to get it to work

If you are running coil packs you can use a 3 diode trick with works fine.

Well it works fine on my Ford EDIS coil packs, and my standard gti rpm counter.

'3 diode trick'....how does this work, if you don't mind explaining. Thanks!

i don't know about other coil packs, but the ford one is always powered, and then the ECU or EDIS unit, pulses the grounds making the coil fire.

so you just add the 3 diodes to the coil ground wires, and to the rpm wire, and there you go, easy as that.

thanks for that, I'll ask my electrician mechanic to see if he can do that

The diode circuit didn't work with my EDIS setup. Two regular ones and a zener diode but the only signal I got was some flickering just when the engine started. I had to install a transistor amplifier circuit, getting a inductive flyback from an industrial relay coil :)

mmm, now I'm unsure which way to go....so does anyone else who also has an omex management system know how to connect the dashboard rev counter?

I posted a circuit some time ago that definitely works with a 405 and aftermarket tachos, but I'm not sure it will work with a 205 tacho. I think the 205 tacho looks for the back emf off the coil.

I'm not sure if this is the same as petert posted before but this is a diagram I've posted before for people.

That looks very much like the design from the MegaSquirt site.

I have tried these diode/resistor setups and have never got it working. You are best off buying a convertor (im sure Matt @QEP will have them avaliable soon)off spooks or similar such as pug1off.com

Im just about to install omex on my mi so I will let you know how I get on.

Emerald do one for their ECU (probably same required for Omex), you can download the wiring from their site.

The Spoox jobbie is different and is for the 4 individual coil packs and takes a feed from each coil and an earth.

Trev, did you need a convertor to get your emerald working properly with your GTi rev counter??
