A little update now :)

 

I've got all the parts back from the enginebuilder, I had a issue with the block, as I thought the cylinder-walls might be on the thin side, but they seem to be ok.. Also got the head finished now, had to lower the inlets 1mm into the seats due to small problems with valve-piston clearance.

Been a really long time since last update on this.

Haven't been doing too much work on the engine, as I need to get the chassi ready for painting first.

 

Anyway I got the shims/lash-caps I ordered now, so thought I would assemble the head.

 

Btw: Catcams claim 0.10mm clearance on inlets, and 0.15mm on exhaust. I've now set it to that spec, but I really think it might be a little tight, any thoughts on that?

Are you sure it wasn't 10 thou and 15 thou ?

 

I'd run them at 10 thou and 13 thou anyway.

It certainly is in mm..

clearance [cl] 0.10mm 0.15mm

 

I see that they have different clearances given for all the different mech-lifter cams in their list, so hopefully it should be ok? Although 10 though is 3 times the clearance I've got on the inlet atm...

 

Think I'll write them an e-mail and ask about it. Not too fun ending up with valves that don't close properly either.

You need to put a dial gauge on the cam lobes and measure the length (height) of the steady rate clearance ramp. That will give you the maximum clearance you can use before the cams get into their acceleration phase.

 

What you then need to do is decide on the clearance required so the valves don't expand more than this when hot. It makes no difference if you use more than this provided you don't exceed the height of the ramps but if you use less then you burn valves out. Provided the ramps are high enough I'd use the same as on most other OHV engines. 0.2 to 0.25mm on the inlet and 0.25 to 0.30 mm on the exhaust.

I think he meant OHC. Big OHV cams run much wider clearances.

Ok, anyway when catcams specify 0.10 / 0.15 mm there surely must be a reason for this.?

I haven't got any tools to take the measurements needed, so will just drop them an e-mail and ask them if it's correct.

 

Not sure how much the valve will expand under hard running conditions? But it's surely only the lower part of it that will be significant heated, so if I were to make any calculations on that, anyone got an idea of what middle-temperature to use?

Not exactly about the engine, but the car is startign to look like a car again.

I've put in an empty block and a fubared Mi16 head, mated to the 309gti16 exhaustmanifold and the jenveys.

Also mounted the oil-cooler today.

I've got some issues with the exhaustmanifold, so will chop it off at the collector and weld on a 2.5" v-band flange, angeled a little different. Should do the trick and then fit a flex pipe to it.

 

The inlet is far too high, found some 20 degree angling adapters that Chadil seem to make, so I'm trying to get some of these to fix that problem. Will probably need to lower the radiator some more if the inlet ends up 6cm further down.

All seem to rotate nice and freely :P

Hope to start engine in a weeks time. Need to make up some brake pipes, fuel pipes and other small things first.

Sorry to ask dumb questions but why the plate covering the bottom of the crank stroke?

 

And the pipe coming down from the head to the oil pump, is that designed to help remedy oil surge?

The plate is a standard item on the S16 engine. The gearcovers for the oilpump are there to prevent the oil getting airpockets in.

I thought that the windage tray (plate under the crank) was std. on the S16, but my '93 engine doesn't have one....

You might have a 2.0L Mi16 engine. They didn't get them until 11/93. I thought all the S16 engines had them however.

Ive come across an early ZX16v engine that didnt have the windage try either.......
