Old Gits 205Xs- Sleeper/Track intentions

Not really sure what power to expect with those mods, I expect it depends how well it's all been set up. Would be pleased if I got 100 bhp from those mods, didn't it say on the advert that it had a Kent cam as well? The gearing is already low on these so with 100 hp I think it should fly!

I will be trying to ascertain the camshaft soon. But don't recall seeing  anything on the advert.

Well after some very helpful forum members, I've been able to find some history on the car, especially the motor....apologies @jamie_1992 but I'll be sticking with this one.

 

So the engine, built some time ago, XS block with 106 pistons. Crankshaft balanced. Head ported & polished by Sandy Brown, 3 angle valve cuts and Piper 300 cam. 

The engine was originally used on a stand alone ECU (DTA), R6 carbs and bogg brothers manifold. Something I will probably try out  but with the more reliable Mikomi GSXR carbs.

 

 

I think the 16v idea is going to be sidelined for some time...


Whilst drawing the jobs list in readiness for the first days of spring, been shopping , of which bagged  a freshly powder set of 14" rallye, hopefully picking them up at the weekend. Will try these out at some point, once I've identified the best all round rubber for them. 

 

Still doing some homework on ecu's. However  found a local bloke who produces the Canems ECU. If anybody has had any dealings with these please let me know. I've only dealt with DTA.

That's sounds like a good engine should have a xsi head or similar then, would hope for around 120 hp from that.

Picked these up yesterday, stroke of luck.... only 30 mile away.

lovely, you will need to double check what brakes you have on the front, if it has 15" wheels there may be a chance they have been upgraded to something with a 283mm disc, which will not fit under a 14" wheel.

yeh understand, had a look earlier and appears to be some clearance. Fingers crossed, if not....they might come in handy later or for someone else.

well after surveying  road/track tyres for the rallye  wheels, it looks like the overall diameter will not be much different  to that what I have on already. The difference between 15" on 195/50 to 14" on 185/60 is 2mm!

Oh well needed a spare wheel, now I've got 4.

I'd advise sticking with main brand aftermarket ECUs on a professional loom, mapped by a properly capable professional, unless you like endless mapping and inconsistency. Not to say others can't be made to work, but 9/10 times they don't.

Had the opportunity of weekend in the garage so decided to tackle the first job of tidying up the inside, everything that wasn't removed had been spared black. Anyway deciding  to give it a refresh in RED

 

This will get sorted out and thinned out when the dash gets rebuilt. Along with Battery isolator and switch panel for auxiliaries.

A few small welding jobs need doing. One being to bolster the anchor points for the lap belts. Might bring the brake lines insider whilst its like this.

Decided to gain what  condition  the engine was in, after gaining its history & owners, compression test showed consistency between cylinders 1,3&4. Cylinder 2 a little low, quick squirt of oil in the pot showed that she may  need a  refresh next winter. Nothing alarming at present.

 

One of many bodges detected....

It appears that the track on the flexible circuit board has burned out and the blue wire has been soldered in to replace it.

Well some  time has passed  and not as much done as I wanted, apart from repainting the interior. Not perfect but it will do.

putting the cage back in was a experience. At this point decided to make my own rear quarter panels and new door panels. These made from 3mm Dibond Alupanel (ali - plastic composite)

Acquired a bit ago  ex race XU5 engine &  gearbox , used within stock hatch class in the oval scene. Running on twin delorto's. Can't make my mind up at present. But its there....

Next few jobs is to finish  off the dash (which I've had to replace) after deciding to remove the stock air blower/heater. As this car is going to be used in the warmer months i can get round misting issues etc via other lighter means. Reconditioning/re-wiring/redesigning/installing the wiring loom and electrics is the next big job.

Jury's out if whether to re utilise the dash or go old fashioned round clocks etc. Reason for considering this is to incorporate some of them into the openings where the heater controls where, nice bit of "frenching" !! and make use of some bits I already have.

Anyway thats it for now,  as always constructive criticism  is welcomed...

Commenced tidying up the wiring at the rear and within the engine bay

With the engine bay decided to totally overhaul the wiring looms and re-route these more centrally back into the cab. This way aligning  with  the final location of the new fuse/relay board in the centre of the dash

Whilst searching for new H4 bulb units for the head lights  came across these to replace the crap side light units. Fit nice and snug within the lamp unit and are fairly bright . Ebay - "Classic Car LED's" shop.

Been some time since any form of update, however tackled a number of jobs since. Arms are 309's, poly bushed with new boots on the ball joints. Subframe, seam welded and prepared for satchshift gear lever unit.

Hubs refurbed with new SKF bearings. Toying with going to stud conversion.

 

Also procured a Quaife and threw into this. Inspected with new bearings, seals etc

Over the past fair few months been deciding on a engine transplant. Toyed with GTi6, 106 16v etc etc. Wasn't until a 8v unit came about, built for the shale oval racing and only  had a few meetings through it. Fully balanced crank, pistons & rods, piper cam and baffled sump.  Decided to go old skool  so a strip &  inspection, cam belt & water pump, wash & some paint thrown at it , its like this at present. Found that the old alloy mounts (engine, alternator and inlet manifold) glass bead  blasted  and then lacquered come up a treat.

Just saving up now for a lightened flywheel, crank pully and a smaller alternator. Need some new sensors (Temp wise) for the ecu & fan control.

I'm sticking with carb's, but moving towards stand alone ecu for wasted spark set up...why?....because I  like  challenges.

However need to blank the dizzy, as this is where I'm wanting to mount the coil pack. Any idea's.? I have drafted up a CAD drawing for mounting plate/blank - plug for the dizzy opening. But getting this machined is going to be costly.

Anybody with any  other idea's? Had toyed with 3D printing with a  heavy plastic grade.

As mentioned  sticking to carb's for now, have these to overhaul. The inlet manifold has already been bead blasted etc. It has been ported/ semi polished in the past. See how that pans out when and if it goes on a dyno.

Seem to be struggling in resizing my photo's in getting more in one posting without hitting the limit. Anyway, always more than one way to skin a cat.

 

Interior wise and due to me being a short arse had to rearrange things regards seat, pedal  & steering position. As  to make it easier climbing out the car, setting the seat back, bringing the wheel closer with a  combination quick release & extension plus dished wheel, it just left me with pedal position. Unless I can figure out a way of altering and re angling the pedal arms, it looking like a aftermarket pedal box. After seeing a few at the recent Autosport show, it looking like wilwood or tilton (2nd hand of course). this purely on the basis of the sturdy design around the pedal pivot points. Anybody have  any good feedback on any others ?

 

I've changed my mind a few times on interior dash and after mocking up the standard dash, found out that I was struggling with a few things and wanting to make use of Race Tech Pro Dash2. As this has compliance for road going vehicles in the UK, it helps in simplifying and bringing together a number of aspects i.e.   engine parameters, indications on lights and also providing data logging aspect. 

Anyway decided to keep things looking simple for the dash so procured a basic fibreglass set up which looks quite similar to the dash units found in Renault Clio Cup X85 cars.

So O'level metalwork skills to the ready , new dash support bar/bracket made and the first part of the dash installed.

Thanks, seen these and wasn't impressed with the  throttle pedal.

The thermostat  housing can be replaced with  an item from a late 8v xu running  a coilpack, 1.6 dpi auto 205's for example,  and 1.8 405, 2.0 8v turbo and n-a engines.

 

Or a Renault  core plug fits, not sure which one but Miles  at pugracing has mentioned  this.
