[Trackday_Prep] 205 Mi16 Track Car

Recommended Posts

johnnyp

Its been a while since i have been on the forum all the joys of setting up a new business. I thought it was time to show some progress on my friends track car we have been building. It started life as a 1.6 gti but the engine was soon ditched and a MI16 was dropped in. Over a year or so it was upgraded with forged pistons, cams etc. A cage was fitted and the car stripped out. After many track days a few problems started to surface manly duo to the age of the car we decided to sort the car out once and for all. We took it to my workshop and started the strip down. I forgot to take photos of the start of the project i will try and find some and post them in this thread. Any way after the strip down and getting the shell blasted we were surprised to see how solid the car was. There was some rust and rot but nothing major the only pannel we replaced was a front wing and while we were at it we decided to replace the other one as well. Once that was taken care of out came the paint. so after a few weekends this is our starting point.

Forgot to say before I sprayed the car we decided that the seats needed lowering so we cut out pat of the exhaust tunnel and bent some steel and welded it all together i didn't get any photos of the construction but you should be able to see what we did in the photo.

Next on the list was to clean and paint any part we were reusing. I started with the roll cage once painted in it went. A extra pair of hands is always handy thanks Tomo.

Next up was the subframe A complete strip down and shot blast later we had a base to start from the sub frame was stitch welded then painted. a quaife quick rack was then assembled with new tie rods and rose joint track ends. The wishbones had poly bushes fitted but as they are going to be replaced in the near future just given a quick clean.

and the finished item

The seat was then test fitted so much better our heads don't bang on the roll cage. A brake bias pedal box and some heat reflective film fitted to the bulk head. Also braded fuel lines were loosely fitted.

All the arch trim was cleaned smoothed and painted along with the boot and trim. We cut and drilled some bronze tinted polycarb and fitted the new windows. The rear beam was put back on with new gaz shockes

the front subframe was then fitted

The project is going well and will upload some more picks over the weekend

Looking very nice so far! The blue detailing on the badges/trims works very well, i wouldn't have thought so on a white car but sometimes it's good to be wrong. Looking forward seeing the engine.

Thanks the blue is a colour i mixed up years ago the cage was original a blue colour so it was decided to keep it blue but while it was in the spray gun i just decided to use it on anything else it seams to work.

Next on the list was a custom dashboard as the original plastic was a bit flimsy. I decided to take a standard cluster surround and centre console glue them together and smooth them. A quick silicone and glass fibre mould was made once pulled of the master and glassed up out popped a nice rigid dashboard. I trimed up the flashing and any small defects and them of to the spray booth for a coat of paint. The photo shows the finished dash with some of the dials being fitted.

a couple of brackets were them fabricated and the unit fitted to the car the photo below shows it in the car with some of the wiring going in. The aqusump system fits nicely under it and a control valve for the system will be mounted on to the dash.

The front suspension assembly was our next project a set of gaz gold collovers with 350 pound springs were used with adjustable top mounts. The hubs were cleaned up and checked for wear and i pressed new bearings in once again of to paint. Then they were assembled with new bolts and drop links and fitted to the car.

The engine had already had a lot of work done to it which included

83.5mm pistons and matching linners

cat cams (not sure which ones were fitted) with new lifters

vernier puleys

baffold sump

We decided to take the sump off and inspect the bearings and crank all was good. so in went the engine.

Ok with the main lump and box back in sitting on BBM hard mounts it was time to fit starter, alternator inlet etc.

With the inlet we decided to ditch the standered throttle body and fit one of the v6 insteed. I got some billet ally and machined up an adaptor to fit. with that taken care of on went the inlet.

The car is run on a KMS ecu this was fitted and most of the wireing was done. The interior was all put in and things like the radiator and oil cooler fitted.

The thread would be loads better if you linked the photo from Flickr so it is shown, rather than putting a link in.

right click on the image, choose an appropriate size (800 is good for forums) then right click and copy image location, paste that into the imsert image box.
