Had a moment of madness and picked this up today (1/5/13) is a 1987 1600 gti in red.. with none of the above and that's all I know haha

Most of you will know it a lot more than me and any info or links to threads or pictures will be very much appreciated and welcomed.

It looks to have around 105k miles, last seen as a track car packing a leaky mi16. Its seen paint as it dosent have the oem colour and has been repainted with the trim fitted. Also noticed it has cage mounts which Alan kindly told me was for a omp cage so that's one job off the list to do :D

The plans for the car currently stand at finding a bent or rotten gti and reshelling into this shell.. well that's after going over the entire shell with a fine toothed comb and sorting it to a sound finish.. madness to most I know but itll keep me out of trouble and will learn a lot from it.

No detailed photos as yet but will be soon.... just the standard issue 'on the way home

Goodluck it needs some work!

Yeah, the shell is going in spots over the shell but nothing I would condemn it over. If you're handy with a MIG, they're all a doddle to sort.

Good luck with it!

At least the old girl is hopefully going to get a chance to live again, rather then be imminently reborn onto a supermarket shelf near you :)

Aside from the roof and interesting paint, it used to be a half-tidy shell from what I remember of it a few years back when I helped Alan swap the engine, although I'm guessing that time has taken its toll from what's been mentioned :(

Yeah I hope to do it proud and build a solid car that'll be able to hammer B roads for years to

come :)

The washer bottle commonly moved there on some cars to make more room in the engine bay.

I know that feeling. I've got 4 cars...and the only one that works is the 205 and that's my track car lol

Put another hour into the car this afternoon when I got home,

The thought of the engine bay had been keeping me up at night haha..

Dwelling after a scrub with 'gunk (hate the stuff, but it was too far gone to just be cleaned with anything I have)

SAM_0465_zps6fb8db31.jpg

Then out came a strong foam mixture,

SAM_0466_zps569f20b4.jpg

To which I got carried away haha,

SAM_0467_zpsc225f2de.jpg

After a soak and good rinse I could have my first proper look at the paint which will need attention as it was obviously a 'quick spray..

lifting paint

SAM_0468_zpsb651899c.jpg

And even worse.. painted around the trim

SAM_0469_zpsae48dc11.jpg

Bays looking better, its not clean clean but itll allow me to sleep.. for now :D

Spent an hour prepping the car for paint this afternoon and while removing the engine mounts found this on the gearbox one,

SAM_0474_zpseeb551ae.jpg

thatll save me buying some haha, looked at the main engine mount but that looks to be standard so not a complete win..

I removed everything managing to remove most pipe brackets and the such without damage which is good. Behind the scuttle as expected was 26 years of grime...

SAM_0475_zps521eeca7.jpg

And one just as I lost interest and packed up, I now also know how much 1.6 sheet I need to block off everything I plan to not use like the heater matrix and such

one to finish
