There is a lad local who has a 330bhp 300ftlb one. I played with him in a 205 with 160bhp basically standard VTS engine on bodies (I only deal with wheel power) and I made him look silly. Very silly. The funniest part being he joked with 'after I beat you...' before the race, and after he would not accept the fact my engine was standard... Did I mention my engine was driven without ANY oil for about 30 seconds before I bought it ;) ? <3

 

So, why would a car with good power (double mine), good range under a graph and lots of boost (aka torque producer) not be as quick?

 

I don't usually boast but just had to add my 2 cents to this argument...

 

The gearbox and mapping is the only thing I can think of!

 

A genuine 330bhp 300lbft?

 

Alot go down the 1.5 (5EFE) route with the turbo parts for the extra capacity. Absolute animals.

 

As said easy to get extra power without buying parts, standard exhaust mani has ALOT of excess metal that can be removed giving more power straight off the mark, and the extra reliability. Third cylinder tends to be the one to go, which incidentally is where the most restriction from the exhaust mani comes from. The layout of the cams is an awkward one, hence why not many cam upgrades (i only know of 1 actually!) but plent of other upgrades on the market from alot of different manufacturers.

 

I quite fancy one myself tbh, a nice low mileage auto one that we can change the box on :)

A friend of mine has a non turbo Starlet with the Toyota Team Europe factory handling pack and it sticks like crap to a blanket! The TTE pack wasn't fitted to any of the turbo models he says, but it certainly proves there's a lot of potential in these cars.
