Not strictly true. There is a difference between the two responses below by two people who find it is not their cup of tea. One is more literate than the other. One is in the spirit of the forum and one is not.

 

The 'bare-carbon look' looks naff on anything other than racing cars made of actual carbon-fibre. Even then 9/10 times it looks better painted, with a hint of the weave showing through. Carbon style wrap looks ridiculous to me. Otherwise from the photos you've done a decent job of it.

 

The 3m looks like s*it.

 

So cheap and tacky..

In fairness, I think wrapping is a cost effective way of making a car look more presentable if you can't afford, or havent got the time for a respray.

I have considered doing mine as my paint is at best faded, and at worst multicoloured!

 

Carbon wrap, personaly I wouldnt use on the outside of the car, but it looks ok on some things (my mate wraped his phone in it)

You can also get the carbon effect wrap in a miami blue colour, red, and white. In those cases, if the shades are close, it is a viable and slightly quirky alternative to a respray.

 

From what i understand from a friend, the panels do need to be flat, clean, and prepped, as imperfections show up through the wrap. especially panel dings. Quite time consuming if done properly.

 

Agree, the gold wheels don't work, and the red trim doesn't quite work either, black might though, especially if the bumpers were also done.

That was Elaines Camo 205 Mi16 and it was back in the mid 2000's IIRC. Her paint was awful underneath!

 

Billy Webb in the Leics group and a nice artic camo 206 back in 2008

 

 

Adam Blacklock changed the look of his 306 Rallye totally with some vinyl. It is now back to red.

 

Again this is an alternative to a fancy airbrush and with digital printing quality now, there are loads of options and if you don't like it then you can peel it off, unlike paint.

 

Wrap doesn't have to be carbon look.

I saw a few cars with full wrap at this years RS Owners National Day at Donington.

 

Personally, I don't think it's a bad thing to do, if it's done right, it looks good.

guess you haven't inquired properly as to the costs of wrapping a car, the costs are around the same as a cheap respray, and not a cheap backstreet respray at that.

A £4000 grand spary job would be VERY thorough, especially on a car like a 205. And for that I'd be expecting dent and rust repair, along with engine bay, door shuts and the underside of the car. None of which is applicable to a full wrap (except maybe the door shuts).

 

So I think the cost of a simple light prep and blowover would be a fairer comparisson to a full wrap.

Baring in mind that doesn't look carbon in the photos, I actually quite like it. I like it because it looks like a matt finish, but I bet it's easy to keep clean whereas matt paint is apparently a total bastard because you can't polish it.

Complex compared to what though..it's basically a compound convex surface right, for all intents and purposes friendly and pointing towards the painter... it's not like their trying to paint something hard to reach... like... say the underside of the another mans ball sack.... bad example... the underside of some complex shapes on an f1 cars inlet.... where the gun won't reach.

Carbon is alot brighter.That's why i clearcoated the parts i did in my car, so it looked a bit more realistic.

Wrapping when done correctly, and on the right car, can and does look really good in a lot of cases.

 

A few Mk1 FRS have been done now ranging from a matte grey, matte black, gloss cherry red, a light moonstone-esque blue, and a few white ones too. All look quite good and make it stand out from the original imperial blue at the shows, etc.

 

 

The only issue i have with wrapping is with the amount of people who use the "carbon fibre effect" vinyl in the vein hope that people will think their car has proper carbon parts, when it looks like anything but.
