One more little picture..

DSC02327.jpg

Had a nice easy half day at work today, so came home and made the adjustable feet for the measuring platform, it's level and everything now. :D

No more work 'til 2012 now, so around exchanging gifts and getting hammered I should be doing a fair bit on this.

Thankyou stranger! Are you still building up that mental golf / quattro thingie?

Ed - it should be a lot stronger once the rest of the frame is in place too. :)

Yes although I am having to save some money with the news of a little one due next june. Oh and the fact I work 170miles from my workshop on expensive Fords!

Trying to get 205 shell work done so I can do trackdays next year in the little free time I will get! Keep up the good work matey, watching with interest!

To give you something easy to work off when jigging suspension mounting points.

:D

Yeah basically my garage floor is about as smooth and level as Mick Hucknall's face so if I were to measure from it my suspension mounts could be out by 10-15mm, making the car sit on the piss but more importantly messing up the geometry. With a nice level platform I should be able to get them within +/- a mm or two.

True,

But given the cutting, welding etc you will still get unwanted movement unless its bolted down to a chassis jig plate.

You can allow for this, and if you constantly remeasure you can get it fairly damn accurate.

It will be very minimal though, compared to the inaccuracy of measuring to an uneven floor!

The platform is taking shape pretty fast, it shouldn't be more than a day of work until I can start fitting the surface to it. I was a little over-fuelled due to having a new coffee pot that seems to brew about twice as strong as my normal one, but bordering on being uncomfortably energetic seems to be good for progress!

I cut a whole load of braces to tie the platform in to the chassis stands, making sure I only welded them to the platform so I could check it was level before welding the whole lot together. Once it was all looking good I whizzed round and welded the whole lot up. It's looking pretty good! :D

I made a start on the finishing touches, fitting some 25mm angle to retain the measuring surface, but only managed to get a few in then ran out of gas.

I'll go and get some more tomorrow, but it's unlikely that I'll do any work as I still have a few final Christmas prezzies to buy! There won't be any more progress until the 28th now as I'll be doing the whole family thing, getting drunk and growing a festive food-baby. :D

Been on holiday for the past week, updates will come thick and fast over the coming weeks. :D

Edit: In other news, I've decided that I'm going to install a Ford 2.0 Duratec engine rather than an XU.. details of this to follow when I'm not in an airport.

Obviously "the whole family thing" involved (to) much substance abuse.

That combined with toxic jet fumes must have let to the Duratec choice…

Drink LOTS of WATER, eat LOTS of FRUIT, have a good night sleep and realize that you need to go for the XU10J4RS engine.

Why not start with the 2.3 Duratec instead of the 2.0, unless it's down to cost and avalaibility.

Not being deliberately argumentative or anything, but I work extensively with Duratecs at all levels and it's inferior in numerous ways to the EW, especially if the budget is limited. Ford boxes aren't ideal either, the Fiesta ST150 box is chocolate.

Not arguing with your God-like knowledge at all Sandy, but the MW Stewart project shows how to use the Ford Duratec engine and gearboxes in the best way in his Fiesta.

He really shows what is possible. But you are right about the Fiesta box :)

I didn't read all of it, but the engine shown in that thread is a Zetec, to be exact one of the late Zetecs that were badged as Duratecs (Focus RS mk1, St 170 etc), but weren't the Mazda/Yamaha developed alloy block engine used in Petrol 1.8-2.3 litre Fords from about 1998. I assume Cameron's meaning that engine. Most of the tuners in the market are going mad for it, basically because it's so widely available, easily fitted to kit cars and RWD escorts etc, badged a Ford and a half decent engine. But it's an engine designed and built to a price with a number of diffcult to overcome problems. I can see the point of using it for pure novelty, but on merit it's not superior to the EW to my mind, particularly when the EW virtually drops in the 205.

ew or dare i suggest it... *cough* VTEC..... with a bit of min-n-match mentality you can build a big CC vtec monster out of std honda bits...

and the gearbox is the proper side for brake bias box room.... and they respond well to boost....

What engines are compatible then? Ive been told b16/18 heads bolt straight on d series blocks?

Guessing he's mate of yours Daz (?)

Wasted an hour looking through that, and still not finished :) Although it's just a Fiesta, what he's doing is pretty mental! I love builds like this one. Made me laugh how he started off at a 280bhp daily driver for his girlfriend, then a few pages on it became an engine build capable of up to 400bhp, then a few pages later it was suddenly a build that should be comfortably north of 500bhp

I'd love to know more on this, what I know about EW engines can be written with 2 letters so if you have the time I'd really appreciate it! I chose the Duratec as they're very readily available and (I thought) very cost effective to tune, with good NA power being quite easily attainable. From what I know it's a very well designed engine and requires little work to get 200bhp, and 250bhp if you spend some money on the internals.

XU engine is out of the equation for me as it's outdated and I'm a bit put off by VTEC, I don't know why but I just don't really fancy it. Feel free to try and persuade me though.
