[body_work] Engine Bay Spraying/rust Fixing

Recommended Posts

Redtop
Don't use filler unless its really needed, it will help the rust come back.

What makes you think that? My body man has my whole engine bay done with filler on the places that were sandblasted, so that rust will not come through for many, many years. It seals the body to stop the rust coming through. If he didn't do that it could be through in a year or two.

there can be two bolts on the inside on some. Worth checking. When I've taken them off in the past I heated a narrow paint scraped with a blowtorch and used that to 'cut' through the sealant

Hi,

Did you take photos of the front panel before you took it off as i did my old grey

205, and after i welded it i noticed one side was slightly higher, and not got the right angle on the

top part of panel ?

If we are talking about normal car body filler which I assumed he was then it doesnt really seal anything. It actually contains talc so if any water gets onto it it then gets absorbed and held against the panel which will speed up the rust.

i have a pile of photo`s here, id think it would be quite dificult to get the panel fitted wrongly as theres about 3 edges it has to butt against especialy height wise you would have to make sure its butted up tight aganst the top of the inner wing.

Might be an obvious question, but are you going to sort the rust in the bay before you weld the front panel on? Just thinking you'll have much better access to properly work on it with the panel out of the way.

I did do that right, but im on about the slam panel edge part of it was slightly the wrong angle to the other side that looked perfect

shape. Can only tell with a keen eye, It looked good before i welded it, only after it looked a bit out. My old 205 also had a previous accident damage to the of side

wing which mashed up the inner wing/headlight panel which mite not of helped. Also it was a patent panel that was not that good and

i did do the whole front panel.

I got rid after i did the work, and got my self a good shell by the looks of it so far and will be starting the project in a week

or two.

You live and learn, at a £ cost unfortunately.. :D

Yea im doing th inner wings first then fitting the front panel up,

Iv been having a think and on both wheel arches the seam as seen in this pic

SN200379.jpg

has started to rust as the water has goten in between both bits of metal,

What im thinking of doing is bending some sttel to a 90 degree angle cut the seem and afected metal out and weld in the ngled steel... i know i would be joining two seperate panels together with weld but i cant see it being a problem, also it will sto pthat area being so prone to rust with the seam being removed...

Opinions?

Paul.

Did a little bit more this evening in the sun :D

RH headlight panel removed

SN200380.jpg

Definatley going to cut that seam out now the whole thing is just rust! this is how it looks with most the underseal off.

SN200382.jpg

Will set about it again when im off on tuesday

As the weather was fine today i decided to crack on with the engine bay, i cut the rest of the front panel off...

SN200389.jpg

removed more underseal and attacked the metal with a grinder mounted wire brush wheel thingy... (hint, avoid knuckles!!!)

SN200390.jpg

and then test fitted a new front paned, i decided for how much extra it was going to cost (£15) i may aswell replace the whole thing,

SN200397.jpg

Then i noticed how much of a bad fit it was! i was expecting to have to do a littl bending and bashin to make it fitbut its miles out!! is this normal??? the photo is the passenger side and the drivers side is butted up tight, that must bea 15m gap!!

SN200396.jpg

So that set me thinking, im obviously going to have to pull the whole panel apart line it back up and re weld it, Why dont i just leave the crossmember out and trim the panels so i can just slide the engine in from the front, im not going to be using the standard rad so i dont need it to fit that and i cant se it being of any structural significance,

What do you thing? all thoughs welcome good or bad!

Paul.

Looks like the exact same panel I've got for mine, although I haven't even cut the old bits off yet so don't know how bad a fit it's going to be!

I don't think the lower part does anything other than hold the rad and wires, so could be done away with, a 205 I was working on a while ago had a replacement one put in, had been driven about quite a bit, but when I had the front bumper off I leaned on it and the welds snapped they were that bad, so can't have been under any strain on the road!

A quick update and problem, iv prety much finnished welding in the front panel and im half way through welidng in the inner wheel arch patches but iv hit a problem, the bonet catch now misses the bonet catch hole by about half an inch! i have no idea how this has happended as iv lined everything up perfectly prior to welding it in, iv also fitterd the headlights and front bumper checking to see if they all line up and everything bar the top panel seems perfect

Does anyone have any clues or ideas as to what i should try next?

Paul.

Move the latch plate, it is in elongated holes anyway.

May I make a suggestion for the rust busters amongst us!

As said filler does very little for rust prevention if anything. I may take longer to appear again as the filler is thick and hard, but its still there.

One of the painters at work tried bulls*itting me as well, saying aslong as most of the rust is gone and the surphace is smooth, paint will sufforcate it and seal it in stopping it comming back. This is nonsence. Its just a matter of time.

Once rust is there even the tinyist bit, it will spread like cancer.

The absolute best product ive found for killing rust and keeping it dead is this:

http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?pro...tName=Granville Rust Converter (250ml)&catID=28&frostCat=Rust&frostSubCat=Others&subCatID=34

I did a bit on a small patch of rust on a Escort project that never really got off the ground probably 4 years ago now. I didnt paint it after, just this product. 4 years later in a very leakey old damp garage (at my nans house) it still hasnt rusted, not even surphace rust, it looks the same as the day I put it on!

Cant reccomend this stuff enough, and for the price you would be silly not to imo

My panel was exactly the same, try the original one on, I did and it fits fine, it's just a very badly made pattern part!!

I am at this stage also due to accident damage. I have a question to ask. If a new wing is to go on, how to treat the inside of it, does the manufactures primer stay on, come off, flat down or just use an etch primer and red lead before a flash over of top coat, prior to Shultz applied after the wing is put on?

Definitely key the manufacturers primer well, as otherwise nothing will stick well to it. Then up to you what you go for, personally I give the insides of wings a thick coat of Shultz before I paint the top side, and then fit it to the car, and seam seal the joint under the wheelarch.

Cheers Tom, just needed some confirmation. Someone said today that the makers primer wasn't so good and ought to be removed.

On mine when i left it on axle stands at the front the rear beam seized because the cars weight was more on the back. Have you checked your beam ?

Nice work.
