Camshafts - Difference Between Inlet And Exhaust

Recommended Posts

SPGTi

Sorry if this is a stupid question but say for example I got a lumpy cam that I wanted to put on the inlet side of my GTi6 head, could I then use my original inlet cam on the exhaust side ? Or are the cams physically different ?

cheers

Steve

they are different (profile wise) but will fit, both cams use the same Hub and Pulley inlet and exhaust, not sure if it would be suitable though.

the 10J4R uses the same cam intake and exhaust, but a different Hub, with the same pulley.

there's some information here; http://www.taylor-eng.com/xu10j4rs/306_camgrinds.htm

I'm sure PeterT could advise whether it'd be suitable and which inlet cam upgrade would work with it.

I had already looked at PeterT's website (and sent a PM asking about pricing which I am still waiting on :) ). He mentions using eg a stage 1 inlet grind for the exhaust cam and that is what prompted my question as I was unsure on whether you would just use the inlet cam on the exhaust side or the actual exhaust cam would be reground using the stage 1 inlet cam profile. If you follow me.

So basically if I have an inlet and exhaust cam of the same profile I don't have to worry that they are the right way round so to speak. They will be both exactly the same ?

cheers

yep, just make sure the right pulley hub is on them if they're different.

The inlet cam wont fit inplace of the exhaust cam without modification. The exhaust cam on the gti-6 runs the vacume pump, the inlet cam wont fit unless you remove the pump and blank the head off or remove the pump drive and fit it back in place.

Super Josh

Doesn't the exhaust cam have the key way to drive the vacuum pump though?
