Strange Steering Related Noise

hi,

this is an intermittent noise of a sound that is like something solid is going to snap, hard to explain but the best i can do,

i know its something on the steering, and comes on and off from time to time, wheather it be going straight at speed, or sat still on the drive moving the steering wheel,.

its a 89 205 1.6 gti.

somebody at work mentioned a rubber joint in the steering system that wears (not on a peugeot but its a bone i supose)
