have a search about i think there is a few topics covering converting to rear independant suspension setups which im thinking you will need to run the rear wheel drive gear to the rear wheels.

if your wanting a rear engined 205 with rear wheel drive take a look at cybernicks Mi32 project for fitting an engine in the back

Something I've wanted to do for a long time. Graeme's RWD S2000 309 is at an advanced stage, which is pretty much what I'd planned out.

There is a few RWD 205 rally cars here in Ireland, but as far as i know they would be running mk2 escort running gear and probably mk2 floor pans.08-11CRS10183.jpg07-8CRS1079.jpg

I've got a 205 RWD, its 98% finished. Just needs seats & a fuel tank. The only remaining bits that are 205 is basically the shell but thats been cut to bits & had a wide kit fitted. Its a rear space frame with triangulated cage. Its basically a Ford 2L pinto engine, ford gearbox & running gear. Ford coilovers front & back, ford hubs with 4 pot calipers. Ford back axle, turreted for suspension, gearbox & exhaust. I've also got a recon cossie turbo engine ready for when she is finnished but I never get time & I've lost interest. 1 day she'll be out or I'll sell her.

this sounds like the way i might be heading, so what is the worst hurdle that i might come across and what was the rear axle from.

It a hell off a big job, never ending in fact. So so many hurdles, you car'nt use much 205 stuff. Be easier & cheaper to buy 1. Back axle is off a capri as was wider than a MKII escort. Would be easier to have a rear engined RWD than put 1 in the front like mine.

If you are after something like a 205/309 but want RWD, you wouldn't go far wrong looking at instead selling up and buying an old 3 series.

I had an E30 318is and it drove very much like a 309, just with a bit more poke. With the prices of E36s now, you could get a decent 325 sport for far far less than the cost of RWD conversion. Another massive plus point would be that if you ever needed parts they are available off the shelf from so many places.

I guess that would be far too easy an option though, but definately worth considering.

The BMW got sold after a while though as wasn't raw enough, even though it was fairly quick.

I take it you're thinking of a mid engined rear drive? That seems to be what most people do with rear drive conversions.. basically a cut and shut of one car into the boot of another. Why not do things differently and make it front engined, rear drive? I mean if people can fabricate well enough to fit an engine in the rear then surely they can pull it off.

I've been thinking about it for a while now.. a longitudinally mounted engine would make double wishbone suspension possible front and rear.

Need my own workshop first. :D

Please don't talk about E30s.. Just got back from das nordschleife and never wanted one so badly!

If I would do a mid-engined RWD 205, I would go the Audi way. Stick a 5cyl with a Audi FWD gearbox between the rear wheels.

But that would be me, I'm a bit weird anyways... :)

unless you can do the work yourself then its probably worth looking out for a 205 rwd rally shell.

My brother has spent a fortune on building his s2000 309

S2000 309 sounds cool. At least he's doing a proper job of it. Yeah I ever got the space to do it then I'd definitely do it myself, no point in paying someone thousands of pounds to do something I can do for nothing.

Why sell it? Especially when you're so close to finishing. Just finish it.

Would love to finish it but and here are the buts:-

I have 2 rally cars needing maintenance

A unfinished bathroom

A 99% escort cosworth home made FWD 400hp been sat 4yrs as never any time

plus loads more stuff like more 205's, motorbikes, GF etc etc lol

I dont want to sell it but I also dont want it to rot on my drive if someone can finish it.

I'll try for some pics soon as I can

I keep telling myself to finish 1 project off b4 another is started. The rally cars need so much time even once there complete. That Saxo will be cool in the end, looks like its been going on 18 months and still nowhere near complete. A front engined RWD 205 is a mamoth of a task, your better off with a rear engined RWD, would be so much easier. I'll post some of my pics

Depends how confident you are with cutting big holes in your car, and how competent you are with cutting & welding. Seeing people stuff the front end of a car in the boot of another just makes me cringe, it's so half-arsed.
