[race_prep] 205 Gti St Build

I thought I would start a new thread regarding my 205 as there has been major progress since work started earlier this year.

Currently I've started racing in Karting as i'm finding this an excellent way of improving driver skill, but as soon as this is built I will move to saloon racing :)

The base car was my D-reg 205 mi16.

The car was taken to Colin Satchell to prepare the car for its next stage in life.

 

Phase one is getting the basic chassis up to race spec.

Colin has fitted a safety devices Group A cage then added a few additions of his own:

safety devices cage going in....side bars are as high as possible.

rear turrets welded in. Rear suspension is a 309 rear beam with coilovers, built by Mark Shilaber to a similar spec to colins design

Front cage and engine strengthening. Colin based the spec on a 205 F2000 maxi i believe. Will be interesting to see how this will stiffen the front :angry:

Painted in black. You can see the solid engine mounts.

Rear cage finished and the inner bodywork cut away to lighten the chassis further. Probably not to be recommended without a comprehensive rollcage.

Phase One complete!

Colin has fitted his rose jointed front wishbones and a strengthened subframe and fitted the 309 rear suspension. Am really pleased with what he's done so far :D.

Next phase is to get the 405 supertouring sequential gearbox repaired and rebuilt, then colin will be fitting the engine and sorting the driveshafts. I have a couple of sets of 405 supertouring driveshafts so will see if I can use them in their entirety.

Looks excellent already, will keep a very close eye on this thread :)

 

And I know what you mean about karting, but if thats yours in that last pic, your more likely to improve your leg muscles than your driving skills :angry:

Yeah its starting to take shape now. Theres so much to do though still which is annoying.

why are the camber/castor adjusting front top mountings on the top of the turrets? wouldn't this place the stress directly on the bolts rather than the shell?

Not sure. It worked on the old car without trouble. I doubt Mark would have fitted them originally if there was likely to be a problem as it was never built on a budget.

How do other top mounts work?

my eccentric top mounts mount underneath, then 3 bolts just hold it in place, all the stress and impact is on the chassis then

 

my mate is handy with a welder, so we may make my rear end ourselves

 

i just need to know how the struts connect at the bottom :) :)

The strut top mounts are bolted on top of the inner wings to get more damper travel when running the car low. wings are strengthened first and the mounts are fixed up through with 6 bolts rather than 3.

I ran these top mounts in the same position on my rally car to gain the extra bit of travel, never had a problem with just the three bolts - plenty of landings from big jumps on Epynt etc.

nothing really to report as I have only just got round to giving Colin all the gearbox bits.

The gearbox casing needs magnesium welding so is going to a specialist. Colin is also having the fun task of going through 6 boxes of parts and working out what I have.

 

I had not realised quite how much extra re-enforcing of the subframe has been done!

The chassis is now being stored until the gearbox is built, then I'll be fitting that and the engine so we can then look at seating, gearlevers and pedalbox positions.

Love the idea of rear coilovers aswell, Do you do away with the torsion bars completely and leave the arb in place? Looks superb!

i very much doubt the underneath is strengthened too. Just use the right thickness on top :) Its not going to go airborn unless i stick it on its roof in a gravel trap.

 

The torsion bars are completely removed. It has the standard 309 arb at the minute.

Well its been 10 months and progress has been...erm....slow :mellow:

After going self employed I took my eye off the ball but hopefully we are moving forward again.

 

The shell is covered in dust and dirt in storage but still looks cool :lol:

After sitting in colins 106 and Rich's 205 with the honda engine, I have decided to mount a seat to the floor to get as low as possible. This will require a bit of modification to the exhaust tunnel but is a simple job. Theres a little more chopping and lightening to do but that will be done by me with a large holecutter and a manic grin.

Colin has now sent one of my sequential gearbox casings to be repaired, then colin will build up a short ratio unit to gear the car for a top speed of around 120mph. The 405 touring car driveshafts will be cut shorter and joined to some 406 driveshaft hub ends, which as the super touring driveshafts are solid, and the 406 ones hollow, will be a rather straightforward modification.

 

Colin is going to keep an eye out for a XU7j4 engine as a temporary engine so we can make a custom inlet for the throttlebodies and get the car running as quick as possible so I can drive it. I am now going to do all the wiring and plumbing of the car myself once I get the car back home.

 

Once this is done I will shakedown the suspension and chassis setup and quite frankly enjoy it, while I build the proper race engine....

Colin did mine and marks seat mounts nice and low with the exhaust tunnel modified, its a much better seating position :rolleyes: I did mine because of head clearance to the cage with a helmet on was to close.
