The Best 14" Tyres?

Recommended Posts

Coonper

Whats the best set of tyres to go for on an mi16 which is often driven spiritedly and driven to work everyday?

And will the 14" gti wheels actually grip?

I once had the yoko A539's on my saxo, which are highly regarded as a good tyre, but i didnt rate them! My previous khumo's seemed better...

You can get Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s in 14s last I looked, these are meant to be VERY good tyres.

I'd go for eagle F1s personally.

Also interested in how the 14" wheels handle mi16 power....

The PE2s are standard equipment on Renaultsport Clios I believe, and assuming you're running 185s they'll only be 10mm narrower than 1.9 wheels anyway.

another vote for PE2's awesome tyre I've got them in 195/50R15 though so can't comment on how they woudl be on 14's

Friend runs 032's on 185/55R14 and raves about them, depends how often you want ot change them too

14" will be more than fine for "Mi" power

:) 1.9 uses the same width tyre as the 1.6, just a smaller diameter and a narrower rim.

main thing to remember, are these road tyres?

Well being as they are an everyday tyre i dont want to be changing them every 2000 miles!

Looks like the PE2's are the tyres to go for!

How much should i be paying for them?

I'm pretty sure Sandy runs these on his eco-warrior 205, they are one of the most expensive tyres out there but do outlast others.

What sort of cost are they? F1s are only about £40 a corner for the 14s, been v.happy with them so far on the octy vrs.

Don't forget that early 405 Mi16's had 14" wheels. They did use a 195/60/14 tyre though.

blackcircles have the PE2's at £68.

I'm a fan of the BFG profilers, they come in at about £40, not bad for a budget Michelin, but they will last about half the mileage of the PE2, so it depends if you want to pay less but wear out more or pay more and get more mileage.

I can't remember the last time I saw a 1.9 actually running 185s! And at twice the price of 195s I'm not surprised.

Kumhos are about £32 each in 185/55/14. I've used goodyearss and dont think they are anything special, feel more confident my current kumhos.

Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s

I have them on my standard 14" wheels on my 1.6 GTi. Stunning!

Nice retro tread too! None of that fancy directional malark.

I can't say this enough. I've run heaps of different tyres and these are amazingly good, well worth the extra cost and I paid about £59 each IIRC.

My findings:

Excellent grip, dry and especially wet, cannot be faulted.

Great steering feel, they really seem to understand this better than anyone!

Very consistent grip through the life of the tyre.

Durability is brilliant, my 14's did about 6k on the Trio (over 200bhp at the wheels), then carried on for 15k on the eco 205. (I fitted the same in 15" on the Trio and they lasted about 15k on the front, including a couple track days).

Economy, I've fitted 165/65/14 Falkens on the 205 now, hoping economy would improve, but it hasn't. The 185/60/14 PE2s gave precisely the same economy.
