Tu 1.6 16v Engine Into A 205 1.9 Gti ?

Recommended Posts

Is this possible ?

i have seen a 106 gti engine in a xs , but was wondering is it possible to drop one into the 1.9 gti ?

As i have had a quick think and would or might need to :-

change the subframe off the gti to a tu subframe and maybe strengthen up

a 106 gti engine , box , loom , ecu , pipes etc

a 205 tu clutch cable

a 205 tu throttle cable

205 tu drive shafts maybe of the xs

various exhaust parts to make the pipes line up

a few questions -

Does the LH engine mount line up off the gti to fit the TU lump ?

Does the gearbox mounting holes on the battery tray line up to a TU gearbox mount ? or can i adapt the tray to fit ?

What do i need to do about the driveshafts and hubs ? Do i use the shafts of a 1.4 xs but can i use the 1.9 gti hub assembly's ?

What to do when it comes around to the MOT a cat of a 205 gti or one off a 106 gti ?

Thanks matt

You would have to weld a TU engine mount in....thats the only solution...

You'd better get a mi16 or GTi6 engine the mi16 is almost same weight....so...why a 1.6 16v ?

use 1.1 Hubs..you can use all the 1.9 or gti6 or 307 brakes.. with the tu driveshafts

leave this idea....buy a mi16

You don't have to weld anything unless you want to use the GTI subframe (unless you have a very early TU which has a different inner wing) but I agree, not worthwhile.

so mi would be the easier and safer way ?

but so many people do 1.9 16v want to do something different which not too expensive but doable so if i get the subframe from a 106gti would it fit onto a 205 1.9 gti

or what is the subframe i would need ?

No you need a 205 gti subframe, cut the gear post off a 205 TU subframe and weld it onto the GTI one.

Or you can just use a 205 TU subframe but these dont use wishbones.

I use 1.1 hubs on my 1.3 rallye..this so i can use the 307 brakes and normal 1.3 driveshafst

you need a 106 gti throtle cable and tu subframe but then you are using track control arms and not wishbone or u can mod your gti subframe and obviously you have the left engine mount has it been made or butcherd? i think its worth it as i have a xs with a 16v lump and on the xs box its very quick but the boxes are crap thats the down side. you can use your xs shafts on 1.9gti just not on the 1.6 gtis.

Pretty sure there was an article in PPC mag about a guy who put one in a 205 rallye, GTI subframe and XS gearbox, I'll try and dig it out tomorrow.

The mag was retro cars Dec 2006, The guy used it as a Hillclimb/daily driver. The car was a 205 XS with GTI subframe and wishbones, engine was a 106 GTI with 106 XSI gearbox, remapped ecu, estimate 135bhp.
