Knocking When Braking In Reverse?

Recommended Posts

Guest Mary

Hi Guys,

I have a knocking coming from the front brakes of my K reg 1.6 GTi when I brake after reversing. It only does it when i'm in reverse. Any ideas or advice please?

Thanks :(

that's sort of normal for std 1.6 calipers on the front.

Best way to stop it is to upgrade to 1.9 front calipers and pads on 1.6 discs

knock comes from the pads moving in the caliper (which i think james means)

As above common trait with 1.6 calipers, not a big issue really.

Either bare it or change them for 1.9 Cals as James says.

O/T: this must be one of the oldest questions about 205 GTI on the internet!

i remember it being repetetively and often asked 10+ years ago!

luckily, there are not so many 1.6's around now :).

I thought it was the sliders wearing which made the knock?

Mine were awful, even worse after fitting new pads and disks. It didn't give my passengers much confidence when I reversed off the drive. I believe it's the sliders wearing, resulting in play in the Bendix caliper. I've had 1.9 girling calipers fitted with the 1.6 disks for a couple of years now with no troubles.

I had the knocking pad problem on a 309 diesel I had a few years back...upon inspection the pads were quite a loose fit in the caliper....I cured the knocking by getting my mate to run a line of MIG weld along the top edge of each pad....I then used a grinder to remove the weld a little at a time until the pads were a nice snug fit in the caliper....sorted no more knocking when braking in reverse
