Questions About Sealant Instead Of Exhaust Manifold Gasket

Recommended Posts

mat1227

I'm planning on dropping the mi in this weekend weather permitting, and on Anthony's recommendation will be using sealant instead of an exhaust mani gasket. Not done this before so questions are:

- how much sealant do you use? How thin is the line when you lay it on?

- how tight do you do the bolts to prevent splurging into the ports? Obviously not a consideration using gaskets..

I'm just worried if i don't use exactly the right amount/don't use exactly the right torque setting i'll either get a blowing manifold or sealant spilling into my ports. Do i worry too much?

tips appreciated

yeah you worry too much ;)

i work on the 1mm rule (passed down to me by anthony as it happens :P) Just have a 1mm thick layer that goes round the whole of the port

you dont want to do them over tight... i get all the nuts on and to roughly the same torque then i nip them up (technical term ) starting from the middle working outwards :)

Cool :) . That sounds ok - I guess with 1mm its pretty safe, I'm using a QEP angling plate so that's two lots of selant, I guess this doesn't make a difference? Any cautionary tales appreciated..

I am just affeared of the splurge

1mm is probably a little thick really - should only really need a thin smear.

Also, no-one's mentioned the sealant. I use Loctite 5920. Excellent stuff.
