Advice On:- Mi16 Bottom End Build.

Recommended Posts

Hardcharging

I have just bought a Mi 16 205 with suspect bottom end.

So new shells a least and maybe a crank grind also

I need to be clear on a few things before I start. As i will be developing the car for tarmac rallys.

Which Big end and main shells are strongest ? Diesel or MI16 ?

Will a new oil pump be needed?

Should I use a "big oil pump spring?

Is the steel 1.9 sump better than the alloy 405 one?

Thanks guys!

Any advice would be helpful .

they're the same, but diesel bearings come in bigger sizes to cope with heftier grinds.

Will a new oil pump be needed?

depends if the old one is worn, its a very good idea to fit a new one for piece of mind.

Should I use a "big oil pump spring?

That again is a good idea, all you need is a spring for an XU10 from Peugeot for £3, its the same as a GpA spring off ebay for £10

Is the steel 1.9 sump better than the alloy 405 one?

In what way do you mean better?

Good old XU bottom end's!!

But to answer your questions I'll start

1. All Alloy bearing's are the same, don;t be fooled by Group 'N' or T16 ones, I can supply lead/cooper ones upto .8 under on the big ends if the crank needs allot of work, Std Alloy mains only goto .3 under

2. The oil pumps last along time, Worth checking thou and adding the uprated spring

3. The alloy sump makes the block stiffer I think, But the tin one takes impack's without spliting open like the Alloy ones so take your pick

While your thinking about swapping sumps it might be worth installing the deeper sump from an XU10? engine and a longer oil pickup. While you may lose a little ground clearance the baffles and higher oil capacity should help with the all too common issue of oil surge which you get with these engines. If you can get hold of an alloy sump of the correct size it would help a lot with oil cooling too, I've done quite a few track days now with no oil cooler and have never had a problem with oil temps.

Thanks for the replys!

Would it be better to use the lead/copper shells then?

I am also in the process of rebuilding an mi16 engine to go back into the 205 i bought off a mate. When i gave border engines a call in berwick bruce recommended getting heavier duty shells which worked out fractionally more than standard pug ones. bonus. i dont know what there made out of tho but he asures me that they will handle a higher temperature and are better suited to my application.

If you are using the uprated spring, make sure you seal everything up GOOD..

I've got the uprated spring on a new engine build and pump, the pressure is rediculous.

8.5 -9 bar (120 psi) oil pressure at cold idle and even when hot it goes to that at 4k rpm..

and the oil pump IS ok, the relief valve isnt stuck shut lol.

So the order of the day will be ..(so far!)

Heavy duty shells

A set if ARP bolts

New oil pump

Big pump spring

I'll go with the alloy sump for now.

Also thinking of lightening the FW and balancing the crank, rods and FW.

I will not be lightening the crank !

Any recomendations for machining in the N/W Lancashire ?

Cheers,

Dave.

Doof

Not sure its worth lightening the flywheel, just go all the way and get a TTV billet steel 3.7kg one for 180 quid??

I'm seriously tempted on my new build, but dont know how much difference it'll make.

Do a search for petert's website about wet sumps and oil control has a few other things worth considering 2.
