paul_portsmouth

wentout to top my oil up the other day ( been burning a bit) and found some mayo in the filler. though i know this is a good sign that the head gasket is gone it can also be condensation.

took her out that day and she went fine

next day temps are getting up to 3/4 on the guage ( not seen it that high before)

next day temps are back down to about 1/3 but down on power

all very stragne any ideas??

Mayo in the filler cap at this time of year is totally normal - doesn't mean you have a head gasket failure.

Coolant temp could be down to a dodgy fan switch/connections.

I'd fire her up and let her idle with the header tank cap off- 'til the temp comes up -look for bubbles in the coolant or a big rise in the level (this would be the exhaust gasses pressurising the coolant) - if that's OK put the cap back on and listen out for the fan kicking in first at low speed and then at high speed.

If you are still concerned do a compression test or take it to a local garage and get them to a compression/leak-down test.
