Cracked Exhaust Manifold

hi

my i.9 gti has devoloped a crack in the manifold which you can only hear under acceleration, because its cast would i need to find someone who is specialised in welding cast steel or can it be cured by just normal welding. Has anybody had this done and was it last.

I have welded one in the past using stainless and put it on nice and thick. Was fine.

Yes I had mine done by a friend who heated the manifold red hot with gas torch and arc welded it with a hi-nickel rod. It looks a very good job and is still going good after 2 months. You are probably best to find an experienced welder to do it.

Just get a laterer second hand one they have a brace to stop them cracking.

best thing to do is,

 

drill a small hole at each end of the crack to stop it spreading, then clean it up with an emmery wheel on the grinder.

 

then weld it up, all will be fine!
