davepug205 7 Posted November 12, 2007 Well Ive just got myself a large double garage with electric, so my cars come off the road for the winter. well on Sunday i started taking things off like rear beam, fuel tank, pipes etc to clean the underneath and possible paint. My car is now in hundreds of bits all the subframe, engine, box ,side trim etc is in a pile on the floor, i stood back after a days work and it hit me!! There is no way its going back on the road soon I was planning an engine swap soon anyway, but i think Ive now got an excuse to do it sooner!! but before i start i wont to sort the surface rust around the front panels, underneath and freshen up the exterior paint. so Ive been looking into first overall shot blasting then etch priming and also acid dipping but not sure which is the best way to go about it. My thoughts are to have it acid dipped along with the doors boot etc, have it sealed, prime it myself then take it to a booth for the top coat in the original Peugeot white. been looking at www.surfaceprocessing.co.uk for ideas (sorry cant add links I'm a bit useless on a PC) anyones views are welcome and hopefully someone with experience who can point me in the right direction as to different dips or primers to use. will post some pics of my mess when i get chance Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
swordfish210 20 Posted November 12, 2007 Acid dipping really is the way to go when prepping a shell as it gets all of the crap off (rust, rust proofing ect ect) so it is really easy to make repairs and then rust proof the shell with whatever you want to use. They're very professional and always have something interesting in when I'm there (last time I visited they were treating Ferarri 275, along with a genuine GT40 shell a few weeks back). So you can rest assured they'll take good care of your car. I've only let them loose on my steel wheels so far (dipped then electrophoretically coated), but very please with them thus far. jonnygoodhand 0 Posted November 13, 2007 Looking through some old files I have here, the price to strip a classic Mini is around £600. I haven't any info on the cost of the priming / e-coat, but will call them this morning to find out. Here are few info sheets I have on my hard-disk which hopefully explains the process a bit more: Escort Flyer Mini Flyer They do recommend that the you opt for the full-fat electrophoretic coating, but any welding will need to be done before this coat - therefore the logistics of collecting the car and then returning may be an issue for the customer. Also (this may not be too big an issue with the 205 though), be prepared for the process to unearth some scary holes! As the chemical treatment will remaove ALL rust and filler which you may not have been aware of! I've seen some classic Jag shells with gaping holes in the floor - but hey, that's classic Jags for you! Like I say, this hopefully shouldn't be a problem with more recent cars. I would be interested to know how they would recommend you work around the fact that by acid dipping you will reveal the rust - so you can't get the car electroplated as it now needs lots of work doing... jonnygoodhand 0 Posted November 13, 2007 OK, I spoke with SPL just and the basic price of stripping a 205 will be £595. The Electrophoretic coating will be £795 on top of that. As for welding etc, I think I'm right in saying that this would need to be done in bertween the two stages above. Also worth noting is that the car needs to be completely rust free and clean before the e-coat is added, so it'd need to be stored somewhere dry between stages. I'm not sure if SPL can arrange the welding for you, but they're sure to know somewhere local. They're located right in the centre of the Black Country and there are hundreds of places dotted around here who specialise in small industry such as this. Redtop 14 2 Cars Posted November 13, 2007 My dad is having a shell done with these guys spl at the min incl e-coat [not a pug]. Picking it up in a few weeks time. I think they said they are now booked up till next april. Can't wait to see it when it comes back. Know of another guy who got his nova done and was more than pleased. boombang 2 Posted November 13, 2007 I know a guy up Warrington way (I think he's there!) but they were talking about baking shells - basically a lot kinder on the metal (no acid left in nooks and crannys) and massively cheaper, whilst still removing all paint, underseal etc. Best bet is to speak to Darren Halliwell and see if he can ask Lynchy and the others (no idea on his username on here though!). he is "d halliwell" over on PSOOC but can't recall what on here.
