Yeah I've heard that before mate. Does anyone have any factual info on this subject, if so please feel free to reply. He said that he prefers to use it on full resprays and water based on small areas

Hi Arahan. I'm getting it done at spraytech in tottington. I've seen a couple of his cars and they dont look too bad. Its a leap of faith to be honest , you've just got to put your trust in them I suppose. Hears hoping eh mate...

With regard to the paint , I may be wrong , but I think it has to do with the lead content in the 2 pack. Not sure really....

of course you can have a nosey when its done Arahan. I've had to have a few small items of rust delt with / a couple of parking dents , inside doors at the bottom of pillars where they crack , inner wings ( surface rust tiny to be honest ) scren out and replaced and plastics refurbed. not bad I thought for the price .

Some slight mis-information about the whole water based and 2 pac (2K, 2 pack) issue going on here, so I'll try and straighten them out for you ;)

2K is not illegal, nor are there any plans to make it so. It is however very unfriendly to the environment as it contains isocyanates, so manufacturers are trying to stay ahead of the game and find alternatives. Until the durability of isocyanate based 2K paints and lacquers can be matched or bettered, it's here to stay.

The Environmental Protection Agencies regulations of circa 2007 however were introduced to reduce the amount of VOC solvent emissions into the atmosphere. From the start of this year, the paint manufacturers could only sell paint products within Europe that had a solvent (thinners) content of less than 420 grammes per litre. Remaining stocks at distributors can currently still be sold, but that grace period finishes at the end of this year.

The easiest way to do this was to switch from solvent borne base (colour) coats, to water borne ones. The old solvent type base colours contained a very high solvent content, so designing ones that were based on water instead cuts emissions down dramatically. They still need covering with the same 2K lacquer as before though, but these too have to comply with the above regs, so they have changed somewhat.

In simple terms, the latest lacquers contain more solids, and less solvents ( again, less than 420g/l), so have evolved from being Medium Solids (MS) products, through High Solids, to Ultra High Solids (HS & UHS). They are still basically the same though, and are still 2K products, but are much 'thicker' (and harder to apply!)

The advantage of UHS paints and lacquers is the fact that one coat will do the job of 3 coats of the old stuff, so less time is taken to apply it, saving energy as well as reducing solvent emissions, but achieving a spectacular finish straight from the gun is much more difficult (but not impossible )

There are some exceptions to these regulations though, for certain specialist application (marine, vintage restoration etc) but on the whole the majority of the vehicle refinishing industry will have to comply.

HTH,

Andy.

yep!! to be honest, a water based job will be better anyway as they are latex based, so you dont get as much static and standing up on silvers. Plus you bang all coats on in one go so you get better flowing etc.

Like Andy says though, 2 pack is on its way out, think they extended it to next year because it was too much paperwork for someone!!! lmao! you wont be able to buy it either as the stockist wont be allowed to store it as it will breach their Fire Regulations etc.

In my honest opinion though, a grand seems a bit cheap to be getting a respray, i'd rather charge someone a bit more, and give them a damn good job and value for money, but thats me!

Post some pics of it up when its done though! (i miss sprayin cars!)

Like Andy says though, 2 pack is on its way out,

Eh? I said exactly the opposite.

2 pack is not (to my knowledge) on it's way out, as their is nothing suitable to replace it as yet. :)

Also paintshop has suggested respraying the bumpers / arches. What are y thoughts on this and is it a lasting solution? I would like to keep it all original for fit / cost but dont want it looking shabby in a couple of months.

I wouldn't paint them personally, a good clean and treatment will sort them out.

Is there anything out there to revive them as they are quite faded. ;)

are they P1 grey or P2 black?

a good trick is the heat gun/hairdryer, apply gentle heat till the colour comes back, take great care not to melt the plastic.

when that's done wipe it down and let it cool, then apply a good few coats of your preffered bumper snot.

or you could take the easy but expensive way and buy new ones.

Long or short version? ;)

Basically a solvent borne basecoat, with 2 pack lacquer.

The actual products were Lechler BSB basecoat, which I played around with a little. I changed the formulation slightly to add a little extra sparkle, giving it a bit of a lift, and a more modern touch. This was thinned with their 00 741 medium speed thinner to the maximum of 30%.

The clearcoat (lacquer) I used was Lechler Acrifan 2000 MS clear, activated with 00 362 slow hardener, thinned 20% with the same 00 741 used in the base.

Unfortunately it's a non-compliant lacquer, so won't be around for much longer, but it's great stuff to work with and leaves a cracking finish straight from the gun:

If I remember rightly, both base & clear were applied with a DeVilbiss GTI gun, using a 1.4 fluid tip and #100 HVLP air cap.

Enough detail for ya?

Is the paintshop suggesting colour coding them? If so, then it's a personal choice really. I prefer to see them in their standard black or grey colour (preferably black), but everyone's tastes are different.

I'm the same mate want them to look standard but the front is quite faded in relation to the arches. When I removed the front arch trim you can see the original bumper colour because of the arch overlapping and its quite a shade difference and I'm quite fussy tbh..

Ask them to do the bumpers and trim, but do them black, not Miami.

I thought he was dead!

How much have they quoted to do the bumpers and trim in black?

Iv been thinking about doing mine. Either that or get new ones. Bumper snot doesnt last long enough imo and after cleaning, polishing my car, and doing the wheels and windows, i really cannot be ar$ed to do the bumpers as well!
