Heavy Knocking Front Nearside

Recommended Posts

Guest Crusty Pug

Hi,

I'm new to the forum and would have searched the forum for this topic but the search function is offline right now. I've got a heavy knocking from the front nearside of my 1985 205 GTi. There is no play in the CV joint thought the boot was split and changed at MoT approximately 3 months ago.

The knocking is intermittent but audible most of the time, it's got so heavy now that I can actually feel it in my feet when driving which has meant I don't want to even drive the car. I've taken it to two places who can't figure out where it is coming from. The frequency of knocking seems to be relative to the speed of the car but not to the speed of the road wheels as it only reaches a maximum frequency which is nowhere near the vibration I'd expect if it was relative to the speed of rotation of the wheels.

I'm at an absolute loss as to what this could be other than gear box or something nearby which I don't have the confidence to work on myself. Anyone have any ideas or can you recommend somewhere in Rugby/Warwickshire area to take the car? This seemed to start after I changed discs and pads but I've had the wheel off to check I didn't do anything stupid and everything is tight and present.

Cheers,

Paul

is it a randon knocking when it occurs ? does it knock over bumps? do you feel it through the steering wheel or just at youre feet?

have you checked the subframe mounting bolts (2 each side on the footwell roughly where you're feet are and one on each chassis leg on the front) and the lower engine mount?

It seems pretty random but because it's knocking almost all the time now I couldn't really say. Its just at my feet, not through the steering wheel at all. I've an idea that when it does stop it comes back after I go over a bump. I'll have a look at what you suggested, cheers for some new ideas!

I'd also check the botom joint of the suspension droplink. Levering down on the anti roll bar there shouldn't be any play in this - sounds like someones hitting the subframe with a hammer when they go

Hi Mate,

if you're looking for good priced Peugeot specialists in L/Spa area then Mark at VTS is excellent and also PGS round the back of Warwick Hospital (Millers Rd ?).Some rally nuts live at ABMotorsport on the Sydenham but they are a little bit too specialist in my view.

Also worth checking lower wishbone joint, and /or ARB bushes. When mine went and it took me a while to isolate it as it seemed to be OK.

regards

Dave

Pugnut: I have checked the subframe mounting bolts and the lower engine mount, and they're all tight and present, at least that's something else I can rule out!

steve@cornwall: this might be the most likely yet, looks like I've got something to fill my sunday afternoon.

dch1950: I've had bits from AB before but I was told he's only doing rally prep now. Apparently spends a lot of time at Crackley garage at Kenilworth if you're interested. I'll give the other two a go though, I didnt even know they were there.

Cheers to all of you for your pointers, I'm a bit of an amateur when it comes to cars so its all appreciated. Hopefully I can find out what it is tomorrow. I'll let you know what it is if/when I find it!

Cheers again!

Paul
