driversdomainuk 8 Posted September 19, 2007 Hi I have just got my hands on an additional fan to fit to my 205 to go in the vacant fan position towards the drivers side. 2 fans now will be much better for cooling now I have the 16 v engine. Two Quesitons please: 1. With the fan I have got the lead with the small grey box terminal to link up. However, this is already taken by the other fan. How can I wire this one up also (know little about car electrics) 2. How can I add in a switch so I can manually switch on and off should I need to cool it without waiting for the fan to automatically cut in? Thanks,

5150maxie 0 Posted September 19, 2007 i wired my second fan to a manual switch under ther steering column where the dash illumiation switch goes.i wired from the battery with fuse and isulate wires.it works perfect in the mcdonalds drive through to keep it a running temp. a very good mod for piece of mind i say. johnnyboy666 195 1 Cars Posted September 19, 2007 all u need is a 3 way switch and run the three wires from the fan to the switch in the car somewhere and bobs ur uncle
ORB 227 1 Cars Posted September 19, 2007 i just spliced my single fanwire to my second fan, it now runs both or none. when it is hot, they both run to cool quicker.
driversdomainuk 8 Posted September 20, 2007 (edited) i just spliced my single fanwire to my second fan, it now runs both or none. when it is hot, they both run to cool quicker. Are you meaning you exposed the two wires running the current fan, and simply "contacted" the two matching wires of the new fan, taped thenm up or recovered them to the line and all worked fine...? Super Josh 4 Posted September 20, 2007 I prefer to do it as Pug intended If you go to a scrappy and find a Diesel 205, this will have the twin fan set up. Take the loom and relays from it and install in your car. This gives proper two speed control of the fans (you may also need to take the thermosswitch out of the rad of the diesel you pilfered, because different year models have diferent pinouts and your GTi one may be different). On slow speed the two fans are wired in series to give half speed, on full speed they are wired in parallel. I personally don't understand why you need a manual switch for the fans, when it gets too hot the fans come on anyway Josh

Anthony 1,003 Posted September 20, 2007 I personally don't understand why you need a manual switch for the fans, when it gets too hot the fans come on anyway Josh ... or why you need twin fans in the first place - if one fan won't cool the car down, then there's something amiss and adding a second fan is merely a bandaid and not a proper fix. If you insist on running twin fans though, then do as Superjosh says rather than splicing wiring together and running excessive current through the thermoswitch and standard wiring... ORB 227 1 Cars Posted September 20, 2007 I had absoloutly no need in putting in a second fan, but I was bored, and had two fans sitting in the corner. So i did it.
Owain1602 0 Posted September 21, 2007 If you dont really understand then the easiest way is to have the fan switch switching a relay with 2 outputs but of suitable rating, you can have all this under the bonnet wired in to terminal 30(batt +), there's no need for the twin speed. But I wouldnt really like to wire them in like yours, what happen when one begines to sieze slowly taking more current and burning the wires and leaving you without any fan. driversdomainuk 8 Posted September 21, 2007 Yeah, I understand that, my comment was directed at the comment about sitting in the Maccy D's drive thru Josh Trust me...I would never be at a Mcdonalds drive-thru....could not get the food through the poys windows as they only have small slats in...could order a hamburger I guess but no Big Mac Meal !! The cooling works fine. I would just want an extra fan, also I dont have a plastic grill so the rad is totally exposed. I guess the extra fan could act as some form of defence from the odd stone trying to take out the rad...
