Extreme Annoyance, Exhaust/ Gear Linkage

Recommended Posts

johnnyboy666

im currently having a re-occuring problem with my roland garros, the problem started a few months ago when i drove over something in the road and hit the exhaust gearbox mount, which pushed it backwards and bent it :) this ended up contorting the whole exhaust system so there was a lot of pressure on all the fixings and made the exhaust touch on the gear linkages which it runs alongside under the car, this caused a LOT of movement through the gearstick and shook the whole car through certain parts of the rev range, i decided to solve it by taking the gearbox bracket thing off for a while but that left the exhaust just attached at 2 points, so last week i had a go at straightening out the bracket, found a new bolt, and fitted it all back on and it was fine again. untill today!! its started doing it again but this time i havent hit the mount with anything its just doing it for no reason, is there a way of pulling the exhaust further away from the gear linkages/rods so this doesnt happen? or some other way to solve it? please help cos ive got a 5hour drive on saturday night as im goin on holiday!!

thanks

john

any ideas anybody? all i can think of so far is to add some more exhaust brackets along the centre pipe to attempt to lift the pipe up to clear the linkage... looks like i'll be under the car for a while tomoro :D

i do intend to change the engine mounts when i get back from holiday, but i need a quick fix to get me there and back! im just gonna nip over to halfrauds and get some exhaust brakets and try to pull it upwards and see if that helps...

well of course you were right sandy, i checked the bottom engine mount and found its pretty badly perished, which i somehow didnt notice before. means im gonna have to nip down the scrappy tomoro to get a temporary one to stick on for when im on hols, and i think i'll order a baker bm one which hopefully will be here by the time i get back :)

i spoke to Mr Baker at pugfest and he said he's currently making a Grp A engine mount kit for tu engined 205's. he said he was going to post up here when the're in the production stage, could be worth e-mailing him to see how they're getting along

well, ive found one on my mates old 1.1tu , we had to roll the car onto the side to get to it tho as its been sat in a feild for a year! quite a sight lol, anyway it took us ages to cut that out, and it looks in the exact same condition as mine! yet the engine in that car felt a lot steadier than mine, maybe im looking in the wrong place? anyway i cant fix it before i go on holiday so im having to squeeze in with 3 other people plus luggage into a mini!! should be interesting!

What you cut the rubber out of the mount and tried to put it in a new one?

You need to unbolt the whole mount from the back of the engine and replace it or whilst it is off press the old rubber out and fit a new one.

the one in the scrapyard i tried to remove the whole of the metal part aswell, but with a mashed up escort sat halfway on top of the 205 there was no way i could get the (driveshaft i think) out from the whole in the middle. and the other one i cut the edge of the alu part at the bottom of the mount to make it easier to push the rubber jobby out, planning to somehow press the one i currently have on my car out and stash the new one in, but decided against it, i think a pocket burning trip to the garage shall be needed when i get back <_<

right, just an update on this, i got a powerflex bush from spoox, spent about an hour under the car hacking the old bush out, pushed the new one in easy peasy, and although it has improved vastly, my gear stick still shakes like its going out of fashion!! ive ran out of ideas now as to what could be causing this and its doing my nut in!! help somebody please!

I have just come accross this thread and I have an update for you on the BakerBM uprated TU lower bush.

The bush is essentially the same design as the XU bush but just dimensionally slightly different (New tooling had to be made).

Its a double bonded bush with and extra metal stiffener ring. The outer O.D. is precision ground for a perfect press fit.

The RRP is going to be approx £30 but I am hoping to get enough interest for a group buy. The price will depend upon interest but will be significantly less than the RRP.

I will add a pic tomorrow evening.

Please send me an email to contact@bakerbm.com if you are interested in this bush. I will then be able to keep you updated with the completion date and the group buy.

Thanks

Stew
