Blue Smoke!?

Recommended Posts

pee vee

Hii..

have a rebuilt Mi16 fitted to the car..

it seems to be putting out quite a bit of (what looks like) blue smoke though :S

have literally only run it to check it works so far..

questions:

1: checked the oil level. its slightly above max on the dipstick (bout 4-5mm above it)

would this cause the engine to smoke??

2: the cam cover breather pipe isnt connected yet..

and ive done away with it breathing back into the inlet manifold from the top of the oil filler

if the breather is disconnected would this cause it to smoke??

bit worried at the mo to be honest..

Cant see why that would cause it to smoke then, assuming its exhaust smoke.

My mate Built an S16 once which smoked for the first couple of hundred miles strangely.

I think its quite common.

Id just use it and see how it goes.

Hi !

Which oil did you put inside for running-in ? full synthetic , semi synthetic or mineral oil ?

This blue smoke can occur when people fill rebuild engine with full synthetic oil (if the piston rings are changed you should not use full synthetic oil for running-in period ...)

cheers

Miles

You should only get some smoke on start up really with all the assembly grease etc burning off,

Did you use new Rings?

Miles.. yes new rings were fitted.

spose it could be assembly grease etc... but seems too much for that IMO

...me thinks that it will be fine after few miles of running in  if you build it properly i want worry it just need some time to loose an then it must stop smoking

thinking about it.. does the black coating on them QEP spacer plates burn off and smoke??

cos it only seems to do it about 30 seconds to a minute after its been started..when the manifold gets warm?

Are you talking about smoke from the engine bay rather than the exhaust?

If the rocker cover doesn't seal perfectly, it will leak out the back onto the exhaust manifold and smoke when hot.

Typically when you remove it some oil will fall as pools over the exhaust cam - if you've only just put it all together, it might be a case of running it for a while to burn it off.

I would also drop out the oil and fill to correct level. Too much oil won't do any good.
