Fuel Pump - Lack Of Fue For Track Days....

Recommended Posts

Longfield

When I drive around Cadwell Park, I notice that when I come out of Charlies and drive down and up the dipper that's 'Park Straight' my engine gets starved of fuel as it's going down the dipper and then it behaves like a turbo's kicked in when it's at the top of the dipper and the fuel is getting to the engine again. Bearing in mind that this is a 'straight' and not an overly twisty bit like running through a chicane or through the woodland circuit etc... my query is.... is this a fuel pump issue because I have a std fuel pump and not a motorsport one or is it because I don't have a baffled fuel tank or is it both?

I haven't noticed the above issue at any other track but don't want the issue to happen again 'cause it kills the enjoyment of driving flat out.

Thanks

Longfield.

haven't been to Cadwell so can't relate the following thought to the layout of the track, but - on the occasion mine has suffered from fuel surge it has been through long fast right-handers; it also takes a few seconds to 'clear' on any straight that might follow

how much fuel are you keeping in the tank?

in my experience, less than half a tank will cause problems

I had the same problem at Oulton Park on the dip before the pit straight. It only happened when I had less then half a tank of fuel though.

I usually only top it up with 20ltrs, run it low then top it up again.... so perhaps I'll just have to run with more fuel. But.... what advantage would a motorsport fuel pump have if any?

don't know - but i'd have to guess 'none' if it's a fuel starvation problem

Yeah, definately. Treat the half way as your 'empty'.....before you go spending money on a fuel pump??!?!?!

you need a swirl pot, hi pressure and a low pressure pump.

Use the low pressure pump to pick the fuel up and feed the swirl pot, then take a feed from the bottom of the swirl pot to the high pressure pump, hi pressure are gravity fed and dont suck so you need the pump lower than the tank or at the same level as a minimum.

Hi pressure pump feeds fuel rail, regulator feeds back to swirl pot and there is a return to the fuel tank for excess.

You'll need a high pressure pump, lo pressure pump, a swirl pot plus about 7-8 metres of fuel line, preferably braided.

oh and a fuel filter in line somewhere.

pr alternatively the PeterT solution I used which was cut the tank in half :) Gotta love the simplest solution :o

Sorry to drag this one back up.

I've recently suffered quite bad fuel surge on a track day at Castle Combe.

Someone has advised there is a cheap fix which involves fitting a mk2 golf swirl pot arrangement (they had them as standard apparently).

Has anyone done this? can you shed any light on the bits I need and perhaps a what goes where diagram?

Seems nuts to carry too much fuel in a stripped out track car :P

Same here having to have a min. of 3galls.

I thought of a tank like from a MK1 Ford capri or something like a Rally Escort type of tank in the boot area. But then how would I come off with no Firewall for safety etc.

I had the same isse at Combe. Going up over Avon Rise on the last few laps it refused to 'rev out'. My petrol guage was showing half a tank so i thought it couldnt be fuel starvation. I changed the fuel filter for a new one and returned the week later and had no more problems... strange

I run the standard set up at present.

Guess a fuel filter couldn't do any harm. Will change that first
